Jake Paul vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Live Winners and Losers

Lyle FitzsimmonsJun 28, 2025

Saturday was time for another Jake Paul trip into the boxing ring, which meant the "Problem Child" headlined a pay-per-view extravaganza against a foe in Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. who was familiar enough to be perceived as a threat.

Whether or not he actually was? Well, you'll have to read on to find out.

The B/R combat team was in place to take in the five-bout event from the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. and delivered a definitive list of the card's winners and losers. Take a look at what we came up with and drop a thought in the app comments.

Winner: Same Old Story

Jake Paul v Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Anyone who didn’t see it coming can’t be trusted with a PPV subscription.

Jake Paul talked trash in advance and then handled his business against another substandard opponent, out-pointing a sluggish and late-starting Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. over 10 rounds to win a predictably wide unanimous decision in Saturday’s main event.

The three judges gave Paul seven, eight and nine of the 10 rounds, respectively, rewarding him for throwing 328 more punches and landing 79 more over 30 minutes of action.

And just as predictably, the winner was bratty in the aftermath.

“All the boos are words, and I can speak louder than words,” he said to a jeering pro-Chavez crowd. “I just beat your boy’s a--. Wait until I get going even more mother--kers, wait and see.”

The win was Paul’s 12th in 13 pro fights and will apparently earn him a place in the WBA’s rankings at cruiserweight, and he responded by suggesting fights with WBA/WBO champion Gilberto Ramirez, IBF belt-holder Jai Opetaia or WBC champ Badou Jack.

“There’s a long line,” he said. “Take a f--king ticket. I’ll fight anyone, anytime, anyplace.”

Winner: Cruiser Credibility

The cruiserweights have long been boxing’s stepchild.

Though several high-profile fighters have spent time there, it’s typically only as a pit stop on the way to heavyweight or a last stand before wrapping up a career.

But times may be changing for the 200-pound ranks.

Unified WBA/WBO champ Gilberto Ramirez staked his claim to a place in bigger-money matchups down the road, using skill, stamina and fortitude to successfully get through a competitive 12-rounder against ex-title claimant Yuniel Dorticos.

Two judges gave Ramirez seven of 12 rounds and the third had it 9-3, matching the B/R card in favor of the winner, who suggested a date with IBF champ Jai Opetaia should be next.

“That’s the fight that I want. I’m the king,” said Ramirez, who’d already been a belt-holder at 168 and 175 pounds. “Make sure you get my phone number and call me.”

The 34-year-old was outworked through the first handful of rounds before he gradually took over with superior technique, a superior work rate, and the ability to walk through the shots of a 39-year-old foe who’d scored 25 KOs in his 27 wins.

“It was tough. He can hit,” Ramirez said. “But I think I had the whole fight. I keep my belts. It is what it is.”

Winner: Mistaken Identity

Raul Curiel v Kendo Casteneda

A tip to future opponents: Don’t judge Raul Curiel’s book by its cover.

His face is a little round. His body isn’t the tightest. He doesn’t look like a monster.

But once he hits you a few times, the perceptions tend to change.

The 29-year-old Mexican slugger gradually pounded away at welterweight foe Victor Rodriguez through three rounds, then scored a knockdown with a hard combination in the fourth that set up a decisive flurry and a subsequent TKO stoppage at 2:09.

The updated perception? The kid is a championship contender.

“It’s only a matter of time before we see him in a world title fight,” analyst Chris Mannix said. “We’re going to see him headlining some significant events in the future.”

Curiel’s promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, suggested that WBA champ Rolly Romero is a preferred target now that Saturday’s hurdle—billed as a WBA title eliminator—has been cleared.

“We want Rolly next,” De La Hoya said. “Rolly, where are you?”

Winner: Decisive Drama

Julian Rodriguez didn’t know it, but he needed it.

The 12-year veteran from New Jersey was bound for a narrow loss to Jake Paul promotional client Avious Griffin with just seconds to go in their 10-round welterweight scrap when he channeled a bit of climactic drama.

He wobbled Griffin with a left hook and sent him down with a follow-up flurry that kept his foe down for a 10-count and yielded a KO win at 2:55 of the 10th.

Two judges had the fight even at 85 heading into the final round, and, given that Griffin had controlled the early portion of the 10th with effective aggression, it was right on time.

“I thought I was up, but I know I’m under Jake Paul’s promotion here,” Rodriguez said. “I went harder in the last few seconds.”

It was particularly satisfying given that Paul jabbed Rodriguez during a pre-fight media gathering, suggesting he didn’t know who he was.

“Call my manager, Jake,” Rodriguez said. “Put that on your TikTok.”

He was in the first main-card fight, but Floyd Schofield was set on winning the night.

The 22-year-old was roundly criticized for bailing late on a February title fight with Shakur Stevenson and said he considered quitting the game entirely, but he returned with vengeance against ex-130-pound champ Tevin Farmer on Saturday.

Schofield scored two knockdowns with quick, precise combinations and continued with a follow-up flurry that forced the hand of referee Gerard White after just 78 seconds.

It was his 19th win and 13th KO in a career in 2020 and had both he and De La Hoya suggesting the aborted championship match should now be revisited.

“You saw the future star at 135 pounds,” De La Hoya said, “he put everyone on notice.”

Stevenson will defend his WBC title in July against William Zepeda, who’d won two close fights over Farmer across four months in 2024 and 2025.

“It feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. There was a lot of doubt,” Schofield said. “Shakur, you better focus on what you got in July. The pain is coming.”

Winner: Prelim Preeminence

Holly Holm likes to fight.

And given that a path back to the top of the MMA world was blocked by the imposing likes of Kayla Harrison, it’s no surprise she found her way back to her roots.

Now 43 years old, Holm hadn’t fought in a pro boxing ring in 12 years, but you’d have never known it given her performance against a previously unbeaten—and 13 years younger—Yolanda Vega in Saturday’s prelim feature bout.

Holm ditched boxing for MMA and became the biggest name in that sport with a shocking upset of Ronda Rousey at the UFC 193 show in 2015. Her reign lasted just four months, and she’d gone just 5-7 with a no-contest in 13 post-Rousey appearances before jumping at the chance to return to the ring in Anaheim.

“I love kicking so much that I just loved MMA for a while,” Holm said, “but then I really started feeling this growing pain to want to box again, so it's been fun to get back and just get those boxing arms going again.”

A class of 2017 inductee to the International Boxing Hall of Fame, Holm suggested the shutout win—all three judges scored 100-90 in her favor—puts her on a path toward a title and then perhaps matches with high-profile foes Katie Taylor and/or Amanda Serrano.

“It's nothing but just, 'Hey, let's all chase our dreams,'” she said. “So, we'll just see where we go from here."
