Sunday Recap

Perhaps the most notable result of the day came near the end of West Regional play in Los Angeles, when top-seeded Grantland fell to No. 9 seed 7outz, 85-82.

The Tournament's official Twitter accounted provided footage of former Xavier star point guard Drew Lavender's game-winning three-pointer:

Lavender had 24 points and four assists. Past Saint Mary's standout Paul Marigney led all scorers with 26 points on an incredible 11-of-13 shooting to contribute to the Grantland upset.

Retired professional player Luke Bonner, whose active NBA brother Matt coached the Grantland squad, weighed in on the tough loss afterwards:

This just goes to show how high the stakes are in this single-elimination format—and how they only increase as the tournament gets deeper, since only one team emerges with the lucrative purse. Grantland had one of the best teams, yet won't be among the final 17 alive.

Former NAIA All-American Errick McCollum II helped Overseas Elite overcome a six-point halftime hole against Trained to Go by scoring 32 points in a 71-68 victory. Longtime NBA player Jamario Moon scored 25 points in defeat for Trained to Go.

The Sean Bell All-Stars used a balanced scoring effort to blow out Team No Excuses, with four players in double figures led by Marvin Roberts' 17 points. Team No Excuses got 25 points from Darrell Wonge but couldn't produce enough to hang with general manager Raheem Wiggins' stellar team.

Seven three-pointers and 28 points from Jamel Staten weren't nearly enough to give his Novastars a chance against a stellar Team Utah, which got 30 points and 12 rebounds from Justin Hawkins and had four others score at least 10 in a 93-69 romp.

Team Utah GM Jonathan Tavernari assembled talent from the Beehive State who'd competed against one another in college and even played together. This has evidently translated to strong chemistry and gives the squad a real chance at advancing to New York for the championship phase.

But second-seeded L.A. Unified is a force to be reckoned with. Despite playing just six on Sunday, they managed to fill it up for 95 points and shot 55 percent against a respectable foe in the Nationwide All-Stars. Dijon Thompson led the way with 24 points and five steals.

It's a testament to L.A. Unified's athleticism that the players didn't wear down in facing a far deeper Nationwide bench. With plenty of time between now and the Super 17 to rest, L.A. Unified figures to be a factor in the championship picture.
