Dustin Poirier Plans to Have Lil Wayne Walk Him Out for Final Fight at UFC 318
UFC legend Dustin Poirier is hoping to end his iconic career by throwing it back to the beginning.
Per ESPN, Poirier said that "as of now" hip-hop star Lil Wayne is set to walk him out for the last fight of his career in his home state of Louisiana at UFC 318 in New Orleans on July 19. Poirier had used Lil Wayne's "Drop the World" as his walkout song for his first-ever UFC fight in 2011.
Poirier has been known to utilize James Brown’s "The Boss" for his walkout song throughout the latter half of his UFC career. While fans have grown accustomed to seeing him make his way to the Octagon with Brown's iconic voice booming from the speakers, he made it clear that he would welcome the opportunity to switch things up if Lil Wayne agreed to make an appearance.
"If Lil Wayne wants to walk me out in New Orleans, I’ll walk out to Lil Wayne in my last fight and switch it up from James Brown," Poirier said during an episode of The Ariel Helwani Show in April. "If he does 'Drop the World,' I’ll come out to it."
Beyond the emotional significance of returning to the song he used for his UFC debut, Poirier knows how special it would be to have another Louisiana native accompany him for his final walk to the Octagon. Lil Wayne is a proud representative of New Orleans, and UFC 318 will be the company's first event in the city since 2015.
Poirier is set to challenge Max Holloway for the UFC BMF title in the main event of UFC 318. He has already beaten Holloway in both their previous meetings, so he surely will be motivated to close his career on a high note with another victory.
