Rory McIlroy Says He's Been 'Pretty Average' Through 3 Rounds at 2025 US Open
Rory McIlroy didn’t sugarcoat it — his game has been far from sharp through three rounds at the U.S. Open. The four-time major champion sits at 10-over heading into Sunday, acknowledging the struggles that have defined his week.
"Pretty average," McIlroy told reporters about his performance thus far. "I was hoping to play better but I didn't."
McIlroy made the cut Friday with two birdies over his final four holes, but ended Saturday on a sour note, bogeying the 18th to finish with a 74.
The 36-year-old spoke to the media for the first time Saturday after previously declining to do so. Despite making the cut Friday, the 2011 U.S. Open champion admitted he wrestled with the decision to continue playing.
"It's much easier being on the cut line when you don't really care if you're here for the weekend or not," McIlroy said. "I was sort of thinking 'Do I really want two more days here or not?'
After his monumental 2025 Masters win that completed his career Grand Slam, McIlroy has struggled with finding motivation on the course.
He admitted in a pre-tournament press conference that he has been "trying to find the motivation to go back out there and work as hard as I've been working," instead taking time to enjoy the life-long accomplishment.
"You don't really know how it's going to affect you," McIlroy continued. "I have felt a little flat on the golf course afterwards."
