Charlie Woerner to Georgia: Bulldogs Land 4-Star WR Prospect

Tim DanielsJul 23, 2015

Versatile recruit Charlie Woerner committed to playing college football at Georgia on Thursday. His arrival provides a nice boost to the Bulldogs' 2016 class.

Kipp Adams of 247Sports reported the prospect's decision, and Michael Carvell of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution confirmed the report.

Woerner checks in as a 4-star prospect and ranks No. 115 among recruits in the class of 2016, according to 247Sports' composite rankings.

He's a player who provides the coaching staff with plenty of options. He's already gained experience as a running back, wide receiver and safety in high school. Based on his 6'5" frame, he also could project as a tight end or an outside linebacker moving forward.

Finding a defined role and then beginning to develop his technique is going to take some time. In turn, his immediate impact may be limited.

His future is bright, though. In today's game, the lines between tight end and wide receiver have become blurred, as players with his combination of size and athleticism look built like a tight end but end up splitting out wide as a slot wide receiver.

That's the most likely landing spot for him, serving as a hybrid option in the offense. But it's not a lock given his versatility. Scout.com is bullish on him thanks to his wide-ranging skill set:

"

He is a big receiver that projects as a tight end or hybrid. Athletic, soft hands, tough, mentally strong, and a future star. Can do so many things very well and will only get better once he settles into his future position.

"

Woerner is probably just happy the recruiting situation is settled. He's mentioned throughout the process that he didn't want to become too engrossed in it but also didn't want to rush into a final decision, as noted by Chris Kirschner of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: "I really don't want to drag out the process. I just want to make sure I make the right decision and it could take time."

Again, he's a tremendous all-around athlete who's going to need quite a bit of work to become a top-tier football player. If a hybrid pass-catching role is indeed in his future, becoming a more fluid, efficient route-runner tops his to-do list.

Woerner had several school options and decided this was the best one to help him make the transition over the next few years. He's not the most explosive weapon, but he's established himself as a playmaker wherever he lines up on the field.

Expect that to remain true once he becomes comfortable with the college game.
