Bryson DeChambeau 'Disappointed' After Round 1 at US Open, 'I Wasn't Fully on My Game'
After struggles on an unforgiving course during Round 1 of the US Open, Bryson DeChambeau admitted that he wasn't at his best on Thursday.
"This golf course can come up and get you pretty quick, and you've just got to be on your game," DeChambeau said, per ESPN's Mark Schlabach. "And it got me, and I wasn't fully on my game, so pretty disappointed with how I played. It's not too far off, you know. Just got to get the putting a little bit more dialed, and I'll be right there, because 3 over could have easily been 2 under today."
DeChambeau, who won the event a year ago, had a pair of birdies on the front nine, but they were negated by a pair of bogeys. He then had three more bogeys on the back nine to finish three-over 73 for the day. He's sitting in 43rd place heading into Friday's second round.
DeChambeau's troubles mostly came on the green, as he three-putted a bogey on the ninth hole and needed 32 putts for the entire round. Schlabach noted that he lost 1.31 strokes around the green compared to the rest of the field.
J.J. Spaun, who has just one win on the PGA tour and is searching for his first major win, led the field after Round 1, sitting at 4-under 70.
