Cristiano Ronaldo Won't Play at Club World Cup Despite 'Plenty' of Contract Offers
Legendary soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo said Saturday that he won't play in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup despite participating teams expressing interest in signing him.
According to Reuters (h/t ESPN), Ronaldo explained his decision to reporters, saying:
"It's irrelevant, at the moment it doesn't make sense to talk about things other than the national team. There has been plenty of contact [from clubs], I see things that make sense, others that don't. You can't go to all of them [clubs], you have to think short, medium and long term.

"It's something that's practically decided on my part, which is not to go to the Club World Cup, but I've had plenty of invitations."
The 40-year-old superstar has spent the past three seasons with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr following successful spells at Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus.
Ronaldo, who is the all-time goal-scoring leader across major soccer competitions with more than 900 career goals, scored 50 goals for Al-Nassr in 2023-24 and 35 goals this past season.
His Al-Nassr contract is set to expire at the end of the month, and Ronaldo recently suggested that he would be departing the club, writing that the "chapter is over" in a social media post last month:
Given that Ronaldo is still a highly productive player, it comes as little surprise that he is generating a ton of interest ahead of his impending free agency.
Porto and Benfica are teams from Ronaldo's home country of Portugal competing in the Club World Cup, while MLS' Inter Miami and Seattle Sounders are also part of the competition.
It is fair to wonder if Ronaldo may be willing to follow in the footsteps of Lionel Messi and many other global soccer stars over the past several years, as it has become commonplace for them to finish their careers in the United States with MLS.
Regardless of Ronaldo's plans and whether he might be leaning in a certain direction when it comes to his next team, his comments about being focused on the Portuguese national team right now make plenty of sense.
On Wednesday, Ronaldo lifted Portugal into the Nations League final with a second-half goal against Germany, and Portugal will face Spain in the final on Sunday.
World Cup qualifiers are on tap for September as well, meaning Ronaldo has plenty to occupy him on the soccer front until he decides on his club future.
