Tom Aspinall Says He's UFC's 'Undisputed Heavyweight Champion,' Jon Jones is 'Retired'
UFC interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall is ready to move on from the idea of a title unification fight against heavyweight champion Jon Jones.
During an appearance on the Good Guy/Bad Guy podcast on Monday, Aspinall revealed that he views Jones as retired and considers himself the undisputed champion.
"Jon Jones is retired," Aspinall said, per ESPN's Brett Okamoto. "I want to say God bless him moving forward in what he does with his life and career. We move on. I'm the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. I'm ready to take on all comers and get this division moving again. Those guys have been waiting around too long. The contenders are getting sick of it. Everybody's getting sick of it. Even the fans are getting sick of this stuff. So, Jon's retired and it's time that we move on."
Jones has been enjoying his time outside of the Octagon and was recently filming a reality television show in Thailand. He's maintained his stance that he's not interested in facing Aspinall, who hasn't fought since last July while waiting for their fight to get scheduled.
UFC CEO Dana White previously expressed optimism that he would be able to get a fight between Jones and Aspinall scheduled, but there has yet to be an official announcement from the company.
From Aspinall's perspective, it's time to get the heavyweight division back on track, and he's ready to lead the way into a new era.
"The other guys don't want to fight anybody because they might be next themselves," Aspinall said. "Everybody else is scared to fight. Nobody wants to make the next move. The division is completely stuck. I am sick of the division being stuck. I'm there. I'm active. I'm getting better all the time. Just stick me in. I'm ready to fight all of them."
