Indy 500 Qualifying Results 2025, Sunday Times, Pole Position Winner and Reaction
A rookie will be sitting on the pole for the 109th running of the Indianapolis 500.
Robert Shwartzman claimed the NTT P1 Award on Sunday, coming in with an average speed of 232.790 mph.
Takuma Sato finished second at 232.478 mph, with Pato O'Ward (232.098 mph), Scott Dixon (232.052 mph), Felix Rosenqvist (231.987 mph) and Álex Palou (231.378 mph) rounding out the group that qualified for the Firestone Fast Six.
Here's what the starting grid will look like for next Sunday's race (3:30 p.m. ET on Fox):
"I was closing my eyes, I was like, 'This is a dream, it can't be true," Shwartzman said on the Fox broadcast after clinching the pole. "I don't even know what to say. The car felt amazing... Coming here, for my first oval race, I would never expect myself to be in this position. It's unbelievable."
There was also drama at the other end of qualifying, as Rinus VeeKay edged out teammate Jacob Abel to earn the final spot in the field.
"I feel relief but not real happiness," Veekay said after qualifying. "We were just very slow, both Jacob and I, and unfortunately, it was one of the two that was going to go out."
And then there was Marco Andretti, who squeaked into the field during last-chance qualifying and now has been in the field for 20 straight Indianapolis 500s.
"Never thought I'd be happy with 31st but today I am," he wrote on social media. "Proud of the 98 group! Now we go try to win the Indy 500!"
As for the rest of the field, only nine cars were eligible to gun for the top six after the cars of Josef Newgarden and Will Power both failed pre-qualifying inspections on Sunday and last year's pole-sitter, Scott McLaughlin, crashed in practice. That disqualified last year's entire front row from a top-six spot this time around.
It was announced on Monday that Newgarden and Power would start in the 23nd and 33rd positions as a result of their technical violations:
Newgarden is the two-time defending champion. If he is going to make it three triumphs in a row at the Indy 500, he's going to have to make it happen after starting near the back of the pack.
