Recap
Journalism was the best horse in the Preakness Stakes and proved as much, narrowly besting 20-1 horse Gosger to win at Pimlico.
The victory was jockey Umberto Rispoli's first Triple Crown victory and trainer Michael McCarthy's second Preakness win.
It was not easy.
The Kentucky Derby runner-up started further back than he wanted, pinched out of the pack by his opposition. The stalking runner fought through heavy traffic down the stretch, including jockey Rispoli exchanging elbows with Goal Oriented jockey Flavian Pratt, and threading the proverbial needle between that horse and Clever Again to make his way to the front.
From there, he simply outran race leader Gosger and secured the victory in a photo finish.
It was a classic display of intestinal fortitude from jockey Rispoli, who rode the rail, deciding not to maneuver outside in an attempt to get around the pack. Instead, he pushed forward, making a risky call that could have ended in disaster but instead, proved to be the difference between victory and defeat.
"If this horse is good, we're going to New York," owner Aron Wellman said after the race, leaving little question about the horse's status for the third jewel in the Triple Crown.
Even with the horse who bested him at Churchill Downs, Sovereignty, likely to compete at the Belmont Stakes, Journalism figures to be one of the favorites to win the race and put a cap on a tremendous run through the trifecta of American classic races.
