Welcome to Bleacher Report's live coverage of the Beach Break edition of AEW Collision on May 17.
Here's a look at what AEW advertised for Saturday's show:
—Anna Jay vs. Megan Bayne
—Blake Christian vs. Mike Bailey
—CRU vs. Sons of Texas
—AR Fox vs. Kyle Fletcher
—Big Bill and Bryan Keith vs. Gates of Agony
—Wheeler Yuta vs. Powerhouse Hobbs
Let's take a look at everything that happened on this week's Collision.
Anna Jay vs. Megan Bayne
1 of 6
Collision opened with Bayne making her entrance with Penelope Ford at her side for a singles match against Jay, who had Harley Cameron in her corner.
Bayne immediately scooped Jay up and put her in the corner for some shoulder thrusts and chops. The former Dark Order member fought back, but Bayne's power and Ford's interference allowed Bayne to maintain control.
Harley tried to rally the crowd behind Jay as the powerhouse held her in a bearhug. Jay kept finding ways to make brief comebacks before Bayne would eventually overpower her.
Ford got in the ring and tore the turnbuckle pad off while the ref was distracted, but Cameron pulled her out of the ring and fought her to the back. Bayne ended up hitting the turnbuckle but kicked out of a pinfall attempt.
This was a solid opening match. It had some good physical action, but the finish fell a little flat. It was hard to tell if Bayne was tired of hurting, but it seemed like she had trouble hitting the powerbomb and her finisher to end the match.
Result: Bayne defeated Jay
Grade: B-
Notable Moments and Observations
—The pyro at the beginning of the show was a lot more than usual for AEW.
—Jay and Cameron are a fun duo. If AEW ever gets women's tag titles, they would be good in that division.
—Bayne's gear is always great, but this week's was the best she has had since coming to AEW. It was very ornate.
—Jay's crossbody off the apron looked great.
Kyle Fletcher vs. AR Fox
2 of 6
The second match of the night featured Fletcher taking on Fox. As usual, Don Callis joined the commentary team to watch his client work.
As soon as the bell rang, Fletcher exploded out of the corner and hit a running kick to take Fox down. He stomped on him in the corner and taunted the crowd.
Fox managed to get in a little offense, but the first half of this bout was almost all Fletcher dominating him. He looked as confident as could be as he strutted around the ring.
Fox is one of those guys who is capable of doing things that look impossible, but for some strange reason, his main role in AEW has been to put other people over. Can you name his last singles win without looking it up?
Fletcher is the young up-and-comer who is being pushed, so it made sense for him to win, but it would be nice to see Fox get a victory once in a while to remind people he is an actual threat and not just a glorified jobber.
The Protostar won with his signature brainbuster to end a fun but predictable bout.
Result: Fletcher defeated Fox
Grade: B
Notable Moments and Observations
—Fletcher has really embraced the pink color scheme.
—Fox got a nice reaction from the crowd.
—The way Fox rolled into the ring for a suplex was cool, but it made no sense physically.
—The running kick Fletcher hit toward the end of the match was brutal.
Bandido, Ishii and King vs. Archer, Beretta and Romero
3 of 6
The next matchup was kind of random. Lance Archer, Trent Beretta and Rocky Romero of The Don Callis Family took on Bandido, Rocky Romero and Brody King.
Ishii and Romero started for their teams, but Archer got in the ring and helped Rocky get an unfair advantage. This led to King tagging in to square up with The Murderhawk Monster.
We returned from a break to see Ishii getting a two count on Romero.
This was the usual AEW trios match. It was fun but had moments that felt a bit too chaotic, especially with the ref just standing in the corner as people ignored tags and rules left and right.
King picked up the win for his team with a cannonball to Romero, but he was attacked by Archer as soon as it was over. The Outrunners ran to the ring to make the save, which popped the crowd.
Result: King, Ishii and Bandido defeated The Don Callis Family
Grade: B-
Notable Moments and Observations
—It sucks that right after they rebranded as a new unit, Buddy Matthews got injured. King feels a little lost in the shuffle right now, which is unfortunate because he is a great talent.
—Callis said he sees King as a future member of his family.
—Hearing Tony Schiavone do an ad read mid-match was so weird.
Blake Christian vs. Mike Bailey
4 of 6
Lee Johnson accompanied Christian to the ring for his match against Bailey. A Speedball chant started up before the ref even called for the bell.
Christian offered a handshake but pulled his hand back and taunted Bailey, which led to the Quebec native unloading on his with a flurry of strikes.
Bailey got a quick but entertaining victory over Vanilla Baby to extend his winning streak to 5-0. He called out Kazuchika Okada for a continental title match, but The Rainmaker was not dressed to compete when he showed up.
Okada agreed to a title match a second before Rush and Dralistico attacked him from behind. Okada looked confused but didn't try to help.
Result: Bailey defeated Christian
Grade: B
Notable Moments and Observations
—Bailey has gotten over with the AEW crowd so fast. It's been a lot of fun to see.
—A flipping double stomp from the top rope looks so painful compared to a normal stomp because of the speed of the rotation.
—Speedball finding new ways to do the crane kick is awesome.
Big Bill and Bryan Keith vs. The Gates of Agony
5 of 6
A Street Fight took place this week when Keith and Big Bill took on Bishop Kaun and Toa Liona. Bill brought a table into the ring right away while The Gates of Agony carried trash cans and weapons to the ring with them.
This immediately turned into a hard-hitting match as soon as they made contact. Kaun put Keith through the table Bill had set up earlier, and Liona broke a pool cue over his own head to show Bill how tough he is.
There was nothing pretty about this match, but that was by design. Unfortunately, matches like this are harder to judge because they rely so little on wrestling ability and focus more on the most painful spots they can think up.
We returned from a break to see Keith upside-down in a trash can being dominated by Gates of Agony, but Bill eventually helped his partner escape.
The seven-footer found a brick and tried to maim Kaun, but he missed and hit the ring post. Keith made the mistake of trying to hit Liona in the head with a trash can lid and paid the price by being put into the timekeeper's area.
This ended up being a very entertaining Street Fight with a lot of memorable spots for all four men. Keith and Bill got the victory, but both teams looked great in this match.
Result: Keith and Bill defeated The Gates of Agony
Grade: B+
Notable Moments and Observations
—Bill and Keith need to come out to their own music. It makes no sense to come out to Chris Jericho's song when he isn't around.
—Using aa fake barbed wire bat that doesn't make someone bleed is weird when a regular bat seems so dangerous on its own.
—Liona has slimmed down a lot and is moving much quicker, but he is still a monster.
The Final Word
6 of 6
AEW paid tribute to Steve McMichael with a segment that included his wife, Dean Malenko and Ric Flair. This turned out to be the accidental end to the show.
With two matches left and more than 30 minutes to go, TNT began airing Black Adam and HBO Max showed the message saying the broadcast had ended, so there was obviously some kind of hiccup with this week's episode.
We never saw Hobbs vs. Yuta or the tag match with Rhodes and Guevara, and social media was blowing up with people asking why the show ended early.
Other than losing out on 25% of the show, this week's episode was a pretty standard Collision. We got some decent matches and a couple of storyline developments, but one bout stood above the rest.
The Gates of Agony, Big Bill and The Bounty Hunter stole the show with their Street Fight. All four men brought their A-game and made sure the crowd left feeling like they had seen a war.
It's likely that AEW will upload the two matches we didn't get to see to YouTube at some point, so keep an eye out for those.
