Can Notre Dame Three-Peat?
4 of 4Despite being unseeded in this year's NCAA Lacrosse Championship Tournament, the Fighting Irish sent a message loudly and clearly to the rest of the field Sunday with a dominant victory over the fourth-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes.
The two-time defending champions rallied off six goals in the second quarter and never looked back. Attackers Jake Taylor and Chris Kavanagh led the way for the Irish with three goals apiece while midfielder Will Angrick added two.
Fellow midfielders Jordan Faison and Max Busenkell each added a goal of their own.
Head coach Kevin Corrigan told reporters after the game, "We had contributions from pretty much every spot on the field, which is kind of unusual. It was a really good performance all around. Coming out of a week of exams, you never quite know. But I thought our energy was terrific, and the focus of our guys was great."
Up next for the Irish are the Penn State Nittany Lions, seeded fifth in the tournament and fresh off a victory over Colgate that saw them narrowly hold on to win 13-11.
The question is whether the Fighting Irish are good enough to repeat as champions.
The answer is a resounding yes.
Kavanagh and Taylor have been key cogs in prior championship-winning teams, the team has established chemistry, and they have dominated in tournament action. In their last nine tournament victories, the Irish have outscored the competition 131-74.
Their stars' experience at this level, as well as the quality of play from every area, makes them a threat to every team seeded above them and yet to play them in this tournament.
Every victory builds more confidence in this team, not quite as dominant as their previous incarnations, that they can retain their title and once again stand atop the college lacrosse mountain.
