Alex Pereira Says Social Media Account Was Hacked After Cryptic Post About Retirement
Former UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira clarified a cryptic tweet that came from his account on Wednesday that indicated he's been considering retirement.
In a video posted to social media, Pereira said that the tweet was not from him and that his X account had been hacked, adding that he has "a great relationship with UFC."
"I always answered the UFC’s calls, but if they want to play with me, we can do that," the tweet from Pereira's account read. "I’ve never spoken poorly of the UFC but with what I’ve just heard I’m disheartened. I’ve already had thoughts of not fighting anymore, and after what was just relayed to me this may be the start."
Pereira is coming off a loss to Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 313 in March that cost him his light heavyweight title. Alexander K. Lee of MMA Fighting reported that an immediate rematch between them "has been discussed," though an official announcement has yet to be made.
Since joining the UFC in 2021, Pereira has enjoyed a meteoric rise to becoming one of the biggest stars in the company. He won the UFC middleweight title before moving up to 205 pounds and adding a second championship to his resume. Each of his three light heavyweight title defenses ended with a knockout or TKO, making him one of the most exciting fighters in the sport.
Before his loss to Ankalaev, Pereira was believed to be in line for a potential superfight against UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones. Current middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis also expressed interest in moving up to light heavyweight to take on the 37-year-old.
With Pereira clarifying that his account was hacked and that his relationship with UFC remains positive, it'll be interesting to see who his next opponent may be.
