Kentucky Derby 2025 Final Results, Standings, Payouts and Replay Highlights
Sovereignty won the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby Saturday at Churchill Downs, besting race favorite Journalism in a dramatic conclusion to the most prestigious event in the sport.
Surging from the middle of the pack to the front and running nose-to-nose with Journalism near the finish line, the victor utilized the tactical speed that defined his race style to earn the biggest win of his racing career and take home $3.1 million of the $5 million payout.
The victory earned jockey Manuel Franco, recently released from the hospital due to an injury, his first Kentucky Derby title and trainer Bill Mott his second.

Highlights
A muddied track created plenty of questions about which horse would weather the conditions, race to the front of the pack, and earn the win.
Out of the gate, Journalism found himself caught up in the pack and faced with the prospect of fighting his way to the front if he hoped to emerge victoriously. Neoequos led at one point while Sovereignty found himself behind Luxor Cafe.
Entering the front stretch, both Sovereignty and Journalism made, patient and strategic runners, made their push their push toward the finish line, with the former nosing ahead and eventually sprinting past the race favorite for the win.
While there was no firm commitment from ownership, Godolphin or trainer Mott that Sovereignty will enter the Preakness, if the horse is ready and able, there will be a conversation about entering the second leg of the Triple Crown, with a chance to chase history.
