Masai Russell Sets US Record, Josh Kerr Among Winners at Grand Slam Track Miami Day 1

The second meet in 2025 for Grand Slam Track kicked off on Friday, as Day 1 in Miami featured several impressive finishes.

Masai Russell was one of Friday's stars, as she set a new American record in the women's 100-meter hurdles by finishing in 12.17 seconds.

Josh Kerr also emerged victorious in the men's 1,500-meter with a 3:34.51 time, edging out 2024 Olympic gold medalist Cole Hocker and American Yared Nuguse.

Grand Slam Track, a new professional track and field league, was launched in 2024 by former American sprinter and four-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson. It features four slams in 2025 in which athletes compete for points based on their performances in six race groups.

Here's how the rest of Friday's competition unfolded with the top three finishers from each event.

Women's 100-Meter Hurdles (Short Hurdles)

Women's 5000-meter (Long Distance)

  1. Agnes Jebet Ngetich (Kenya): 14:25.80

Men's 200-meter (Long Sprints)

  1. Jereem Richards (Trinidad and Tobago): 19.86

Women's 100-meter (Short Sprints)

  1. Melissa Jefferson-Wooden (United States): 10.75

Men's 3000-meter (Long Distance)

  1. Andrew Coscoran (Ireland): 8:17.56

Women's 400-meter (Long Sprints)

  1. Marileidy Paulino (Dominican Republic): 49.21
  2. Salwa Eid Naser (Bahrain): 49.33
  3. Alexis Holmes (United States): 50.36

The men's 200-meter was one of the closest final results of the day, as Jereem Richards and Alexander Ogando both finished with identical times of 19.86 seconds before it was determined that Richards was the winner.

Meanwhile, Melissa Jefferson-Wooden held off a strong field in the women's 100-meter that included Gabby Thomas and Tamari Davis.

Alison Dos Santos continued to dominate the men's 400-meter hurdles, recording 12 Grand Slam Track points with his victory.

Marileidy Paulino picked up where she left off at the Olympics in the women's 400-meter, as the gold medalist came from behind to surpass Salwa Eid Naser down the stretch.

Grand Slam Track action in Miami will continue on Saturday.
