Orlando Summer League 2015: Thursday Scores, Stats, Highlights and Reaction

Adam WellsJul 9, 2015

Thursday is the penultimate day of action at the Orlando Summer League, with three teams entering play undefeated. The Miami Heat are the only one in that trio who have completed play before championship day.

The other two—Memphis Grizzlies and Orlando Magic (White)—put their perfect 3-0 marks on the line. The Grizzlies faced a more difficult task, going against the 2-1 Oklahoma City Thunder, while Orlando dealt with the winless Brooklyn Nets.

With teams still jockeying for position in the standings, in addition to players wanting to make an impact, Day 6 of competition in Orlando promised to be the most intense one yet.

Thursday Scores

Indiana Pacers vs. Orlando Magic (Blue)Pacers def. Magic, 91-85
Brooklyn Nets vs. Orlando Magic (White)Magic def. Nets, 65-58
Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Memphis GrizzliesGrizzlies def. Thunder, 87-81

Grizzlies def. Thunder, 87-81

The two undefeated teams entering play on Thursday ended the day that way, as the Grizzlies ended their "regular season" in Orlando with an 87-81 victory over the Thunder.

Memphis got a balanced offensive attack with three players scoring in double figures, led by 2014 second-round pick Jarnell Stokes with 18. Jordan Adams, whom the Grizzlies took in the first round last year, and Russ Smith each added 17 points.

Adams had his best shooting performance of the summer, going 5-of-12 from the floor. Stokes continued to shoot a high percentage in the low post, going 7-of-10 from the floor, raising his overall percent to 54.5 through four games.

Despite the loss, the Thunder have to be encouraged by the continued strong play from Mitch McGary. The 2014 first-round pick had 16 points and seven rebounds, making the second time this summer he's reached double digits in points.

Here's McGary showing off his dual-threat skills in the fourth quarter, via NBA TV:

McGary played sporadically as a rookie for the Thunder, appearing in 32 games and splitting time between the NBA and NBA D-League. He's got the talent to be a solid contributor for one of the league's best teams, but this will be an important season for his development.

Magic def. Nets, 65-58

In a stark contrast to Thursday's opening game, the Magic defeated the Nets 65-58 in a defensive slugfest to keep their perfect record intact.

Both teams shot under 40 percent overall, but the Magic were solid from three-point range by connecting on four of their 10 attempts. The Nets weren't afraid to shoot from distance, but going 5-of-26 is not a successful formula.

Keith Appling led all scorers with 19 points and added six steals for good measure. Sam Vecenie of CBS Sports thinks the former Michigan State star has earned a longer look from some team with his overall performance this summer:

The 23-year-old Appling spent last season playing in the D-League, so NBA teams have had plenty of exposure to him against professional competition. He averaged 14.7 points and 2.7 assists per game this summer before today.

It was a tough day offensively for Brooklyn's rookie duo of Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Cliff Alexander. They combined to score seven points on 3-of-12 shooting, but they were all over the glass with 19 rebounds.

Ryan Boatright led the Nets with 13 points, though eight of those came from the free-throw line. The team went 19-of-62 from the floor, and this was the second consecutive game it has scored fewer than 60 points.

Pacers def. Magic, 91-85

In one of the best combined shooting games of the summer league, the Indiana Pacers outlasted the Orlando Magic, 91-85, thanks in large part to Joe Young's 28 points.

Young was terrific from the field, shooting 9-of-17 overall and 5-of-9 from three-point range, while adding three assists and three rebounds. This also comes one day after the former Oregon star dropped 25 points against Detroit.

Speaking to David Benner of Pacers.com following Wednesday's game against the PistonsIndiana assistant coach Dan Burke had good things to say about Young's future in the league: "Joe is still figuring out the [NBA] game, when to pass, when to shoot, but he's got good potential."

The Pacers need help on offense with Paul George still getting his speed back after missing most of last season, so Young's performance the past two days has to be encouraging for the front office.

Yet as good as Young was, and as much firepower as both teams had, one of the best highlights came on defense thanks to this block from Pacers big man Arinze Onuaku, via NBA TV on Twitter:

In a losing effort, Orlando had two players break the 20-point barrier. Tyler Harvey led the Magic with 24 points, followed closely by Devyn Marble's 22-point effort.

This marked the first summer game that Harvey has played more than 12 minutes, finishing with just over 25, and he made all of them count.

Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel noted some of the Magic's roster decisions prior to this game were likely going to help Harvey:

Harvey lived up to his end of the billing with his best game of the summer, likely impressing scouts from other organizations as well.

The Pacers' win leaves both teams with a 1-3 mark heading into the final day of play and a potential rematch in the No. 7 vs. No. 8 game on Friday, depending on the late-game results.
