NBA Trade Rumors: Latest Buzz Surrounding Jamal Crawford, Mo Williams and More

Daniel RogersJul 5, 2015

In what was expected to be one of the wildest free-agency periods in recent memory—the opening salvo of a three-year run of salary-cap craziness—things have been relatively tame.

Many of the top players have agreed to re-sign, and those who were expected to leave didn’t surprise much with their final destinations. It has been a relatively calm free-agency period, but even with most of the stars already having agreed to deals, the offseason is far from over, and plenty of teams will still be able to find the help they need.

With teams still looking for that final piece that will put them over the top, a number of sign-and-trades are being discussed that could shift role players into much more prominent positions with teams looking to compete now.

Here are some of the latest trade rumors around the league.

K.J. McDaniels on his way out of Houston

HOUSTON, TX - APRIL 15: K.J. McDaniels #32 of the Houston Rockets handles the ball against the Utah Jazz on April 15, 2015 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. NOTE TO USER: User expressly acknowledges and agrees that, by downloading and or using this

While their Texas brethren have been making some of the biggest splashes of the offseason with the agreements by DeAndre Jordan and LaMarcus Aldridge to join the Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs, respectively, the Houston Rockets have been relatively quiet.

With a team that has proved it is ready to compete now, though, there wasn’t much need for a heavy pursuit of a star free agent. But a possible sign-and-trade involving a role player is in the cards for Houston in the hopes of finding the final piece it needs to make it to the NBA Finals.

Per Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle, the Rockets are looking to re-sign K.J. McDaniels and then pursue a trade using the young shooting guard:

With arguably the best shooting guard in the league in James Harden on the team, there aren’t a ton of minutes in McDaniels' future, and a move would make sense for both him and the Rockets.

McDaniels averaged 7.9 points per game last season and is capable of putting up big minutes, averaging 25.4 minutes per contest with the Philadelphia 76ers before being acquired by Houston midway through the year.

Clippers looking to deal Jamal Crawford

Still reeling following the loss of Jordan to Dallas, the Los Angeles Clippers desperately need help at center before the window closes on the Blake Griffin and Chris Paul era.

Without many pieces to move, it appears Los Angeles is dipping into its relatively short bench in the hopes of finding a center who can replace Jordan's production next season.

Alex Kennedy of Basketball Insiders reports that the Clippers might be willing to trade Jamal Crawford in order to find some help on the inside:

Despite approaching the twilight of his career, Crawford had a strong 2014-15 campaign, averaging 15.8 points and 2.5 assists per game as one of the only players who received any serious playing time for the Clippers.

But desperate times call for desperate measures. The Clippers need help inside without Jordan to anchor things on both sides of the ball, and a team will be willing to pick up a veteran like Crawford, who can be a leader both on and off the court.

Charlotte looking to deal Mo Williams

It seems like a lifetime ago when Mo Williams was making All-Star Games as the second option behind LeBron James in Cleveland and averaging more than 17 points per game for three consecutive seasons.

After spending time with the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Charlotte Hornets last season, Williams might be on his way to yet another team—which would be his eighth since being drafted in 2003 by the Utah Jazz—as the Hornets are interested in dealing the point guard.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, Charlotte is looking at the former NBA All-Star as a possible piece in a sign-and-trade:

Last season, Williams had his best statistical season since 2011, averaging 14.2 points and 6.2 assists per game for the Hornets and the Timberwolves.

He's still an able starter when he needs to be, though he is well past his prime, and the Hornets will be hoping a team is willing to take a flyer on Williams and send a role player the opposite direction who could help them get back into playoff contention in a weak Eastern Conference.
