Hanley Ramirez Doesn't Quit on Anything But Making Sense of Dan Uggla's Comments

Leslie MonteiroSep 9, 2009

Dan Uggla called out Hanley Ramirez last week for quitting on the team after leaving the game with a hamstring injury.

Naturally, Ramirez displayed his anger towards Uggla. Who knew he channeled his anger at the plate?

Since that incident with Uggla, the Marlins' star has gone on a tear by hitting a couple of home runs and driving in six runs prior to last night's game against the Mets.

Ramirez ignited the Marlins' four-game winning streak last week by stroking a base hit that tied the game, which resulted in the Marlins scoring many more runs to defeat the Braves last Wednesday night.

Last night, he belted a two-run home run in the third inning to give the Marlins a 2-0 lead against the Mets.

Who's quitting now, Danny?

Let's not give Uggla any credit for Ramirez's recent performance. There is no correlation to that spat spurring the Marlins shortstop on.

This is nothing more than a coincidence. A great player does not need a teammate to yell at him to play better.

Ramirez performs at a high level almost every game. The Marlins count on him to drive in runs and he performs to their expectations.

There is a reason why he leads in batting average and why he is on pace to have 110 RBI this season.

He knows how to hit and he knows how to come through, so he does not need anyone to motivate him. This is a guy that wants to get national attention for his work, so he has an incentive to play well.

Ramirez understands there is more than just being a star on the team. It means having the burden of being a leader every day by leading the team to victories, not just only putting up good numbers.

Right now, Ramirez and Chris Coghlan are the only Marlins that are performing on offense while big mouth Uggla continues to be an enigma with his bat.

We hear talk about how Ramirez does not play hard or he does not care.

Talk about ridiculous. From watching the games, he hustles to first when he grounds out and he sacrifices his body to make plays at shortstop.

If that's not an example of not playing hard, then what else should Ramirez do to play hard?

His hamstring continues to bother him to the point he can't run fast at all, yet he finds a way to make it work.

This should shut people up when it comes to Ramirez's commitment to winning.

The only knock on him is that he can be aloof at times, but which superstar in any sport isn't?

His teammates shouldn't care how Ramirez acts toward them or approaches his job.

As long as the guy performs, it shouldn't be an issue.

Last check, Ramirez does that.

Ramirez deserves appreciation instead of backstabbing remarks from his teammates.

Without Ramirez, the Marlins would likely have a losing record.
