Who Are the New York Jets' Biggest Wild Cards Entering 2015 Season?

Aidan MackieJun 4, 2015

The New York Jets may be the biggest boom-or-bust team in the league in 2015.

The Jets did a lot this offseason to improve upon a roster that mustered just four victories a year ago, bringing in Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie and Buster Skrine to fix an awful secondary as well as Brandon Marshall and Stevan Ridley to add talent to the offense.

However, it is yet to be seen how these players fit into their new roles and whether New York will be an improved team when it takes the field in Week 1.

Gang Green have the potential to claim a postseason berth, but they could also go up in flames and finish well below .500 once again.

The Jets have plenty of wild cards throughout their roster, and the team's season will ultimately depend on how these players perform this upcoming season.

Let's take a look at some of the biggest boom-or-bust individuals on Gang Green.

Brandon Marshall

Marshall has been one of the most productive receivers in football for much of the last decade, but he still comes to the Big Apple with plenty of question marks.

Marshall is a No. 1 receiver by whatever measurement is used. He is a big target who can move the chains and make plays downfield, and he is always a threat in the red zone. From 2007 to 2013, he averaged an unbelievable 99 receptions, 1,249 yards and eight touchdowns a season, despite playing for three different teams.

However, the University of Central Florida product is coming off an injury-plagued 2014 that saw his production drop immensely. He is also getting up there in age, as he turned 31 years old this offseason.

Marshall's attitude is also a question mark. The Bears gave up on him despite his chemistry with Jay Cutler and production over the last few years, and he can often be a difficult man to please. That's why he has already put on four different NFL uniforms in his career.

Marshall is a special talent. That cannot be debated. He could easily step into Gang Green's offense and emerge as the No. 1 option. However, there is also a good chance that he struggles to duplicate his former production, whether it be because of his age, durability or attitude.

The Pittsburgh native is truly a boom-or-bust player for Todd Bowles and Co.

Calvin Pryor

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - DECEMBER 21: Wide receiver Danny Amendola #80 of the New England Patriots is shoved by free safety Calvin Pryor #25 of the New York Jets in the first quarter during a game at MetLife Stadium on December 21, 2014 in East Rutherford,

Despite other needs and a slew of talented prospects on the board, the Jets selected Pryor with the 18th overall pick in last year's draft.

The pick made sense for a variety of reasons, as Pryor is a physical defensive back with a knack for making big plays.

However, the Louisville product didn't make the kind of impact in his rookie year that New York had hoped. He struggled in man-to-man coverage and had issues in the tackling department as well. Granted, he was playing out of position for much of the year because of New York's issues on the back end of the defense.

In his second year, Pryor will be back at his natural spot at strong safety. His issues in coverage should be more masked, as he will be playing alongside two elite cornerbacks and a decent safety in Marcus Gilchrist.

The 22-year-old will likely play close to the line of scrimmage on a consistent basis—a place where he tends to thrive. Pryor should make a huge impact in the running game as well as in the pass-rushing department.

The Jets defense doesn't appear to have many holes on paper, but its performance could depend on whether Pryor improves his play in his sophomore season.

If Pryor can play up to his potential, Gang Green's defense could be filthy good, but if he struggles, the unit could be disappointing.

Carpenter didn't get much attention when he signed a deal with the Jets this offseason, as everyone was so caught up in the Brandon Marshall trade and the Darrelle Revis signing.

However, Carpenter will have a huge impact on Gang Green's offense this season, whether it be for the best or the worst. The former Seahawk will be relied upon to anchor the interior of the offensive line along with Nick Mangold.

Carpenter, a first-round selection back in 2011, is a big, strong presence with a wide frame and decent quickness, but he has been plagued by injuries and inconsistency over his professional career. In fact, he only started 39 of a possible 64 games in his four-year stint with Seattle

The Jets have limited depth along the offensive line, especially at the guard spot. If the 26-year-old struggles with injuries or poor play, New York won't have many viable options to replace him.

Carpenter has the talent to be a great signing, and he fits well in Chan Gailey's offense. However, he comes with some serious concerns.
