UFC Fight Night 67 Results: 4 Fights for Carlos Condit to Take Next
The oil can was in full effect for Carlos Condit Saturday night. A knee injury kept him out for more than a year, but rust was not a major factor in the main event of UFC Fight Night 67, where Condit scored a TKO of a tough Thiago Alves.
Though Condit was tentative at the opening and didn't move with exceptional fluidity, the Natural Born Killer still bloodied, shattered and battered Alves in a violent second round, breaking Alves' nose and spurring a cageside doctor to stop the fight.
"After the feeling-out process, I just started thinking about the different things we had worked on.... And the first thing I threw really, really worked," Condit told broadcaster Jon Anik in the cage after the fight, in apparent reference to a left elbow that first damaged Alves' nose. "I want a good fight [next]. I want somebody exciting. I want somebody the fans are excited to watch me fight."
We can help, Carlos. Here are four opponents Condit could face who would make sense in the rankings and provide an exciting matchup.
Dong Hyun Kim
1 of 4
Dong Hyun Kim is on his way up. He's won five of his last six, most recently a submission win over a very respected veteran in Josh Burkman just last Saturday.
Kim and his top-shelf judo would give Condit a test. Plus there's always the possibility of a wild slugfest breaking out when Kim is involved. That's the difference between when they fought the first time and a potential second matchup.
Putting it another way, neither man is a stranger to spinning stuff. That sets up a fun matchup. And with both men looking very good lately, the winner of this one would be well-positioned for a title challenge.
Matt Brown/Tim Means Winner
2 of 4
Who in the MMA community wouldn't stop in their tracks to watch Matt Brown vs. Carlos Condit? No one, that is who. We're talking drop the groceries, drop the baby, drop whatever you're holding.
No one should confuse Condit's wildness for a lack of technical acumen. He's an extremely sound fighter. Brown? A little less so. He likes to lure opponents into donnybrooks.
Part of me thinks that Condit would take the bait in this particular contest. Blood and knees and combos galore. Just cut the bonus checks now.
Tim Means would be almost as compelling. While not quite on the level of Condit or Brown from a rankings standpoint, he's been mightily impressive during his current four-win streak, showing aggression and a well-rounded skill set in the process.
Either of these bouts could easily main-event a cable card. Condit-Brown could co-main a pay-per-view.
Nick Diaz
3 of 4
Obviously, this one comes with a big asterisk.
Nick Diaz is currently in regulatory limbo after testing positive for marijuana metabolites and having his disciplinary hearing with the Nevada State Athletic Commission delayed multiple times (his next hearing date hasn't yet been scheduled).
In the meantime, he's under temporary suspension, so he won't be fighting any time soon. Even so, tell me you wouldn't want to see a rematch between these two.
Although Condit won back in 2012, he'd surely want a chance to address criticisms that he was reluctant to engage with Diaz, or that the judges made the wrong decision.
Tyron Woodley
4 of 4
Speaking of rematches.
Although Condit demurred when given a chance to call Tyron Woodley's name Saturday night, it's hard to imagine a scenario under which he wouldn't welcome another dance with Woodley.
In case you forgot, Condit suffered that ACL and patellar injury during his fight with Woodley in March 2014. When Condit's knee buckled, the fight ended and Woodley had a TKO the strange way.
It also doesn't hurt that Woodley has morphed into one of the best welterweights in the world. With consecutive wins over Dong Hyun Kim and Kelvin Gastelum, the thunder-fisted wrestle-boxer has established himself as an elite.
The winner of this would surely be in line for the next title shot, one would have to think. Woodley is currently unattached to another fight. Regardless of whether it's next, this one is inevitable.
