Chelsea Transfer News: Big-Money Moves and Rumours Linked to Jose Mourinho

Stuart NewmanMay 30, 2015

Chelsea are reportedly ready to make a shock move for Manchester United flop Radamel Falcao, who returned to Monaco following his unsuccessful loan stint at Old Trafford.

Gianluca Di Marzio writes that Blues manager Jose Mourinho is a fan of the Colombian and may well give him the chance to kickstart his career.

Falcao came to the Premier League with a lethal reputation in front of goal to uphold but only managed to find the net four times for United—provoking an influx of much-deserved criticism.

It seems that Mourinho is seeing the bigger picture, though, and sensing the chance to land a world-class striker at a cut-price deal.

Chris Wheeler and Matt Barlow of the Daily Mail report that Falcao is prepared to take a significant pay cut from the reported £285,000 per week he earned at Old Trafford to join Chelsea.

That’s just as well, too, as he proved quite a waste of money for the Red Devils—as Football Tweet revealed:

In fact, he made Sam Tighe’s Premier League Flop XI of the 2014/15 season, as he told Ryan Bailey in Bleacher Report’s exclusive video:

However, he could still prove a lot of people wrong, and he certainly fits the bill for what Chelsea need.

Following Didier Drogba’s departure and the fact that Loic Remy’s future at Stamford Bridge is somewhat uncertain, there’s certainly room for a new striker in the Blues’ setup.

Plus, with Chelsea likely to be fighting for trophies on four fronts at the back end of the season, they need a top-level reinforcement for Diego Costa.

The Spain international is superb, sure, but it’s doubtful he’ll have enough in the tank to produce his best week in, week out without a rest.

Still, Mourinho told the press that he’s in the market for a few players, just not those who will displace his current side—via Anthony Williams of Metro:

"

We like the players, we are happy with the players. Two or three are always coming to the club, that’s normal. The players I am looking for are my players, the players I want to keep. Last season I had players I wanted to sell. He also added that it is difficult to improve on the players he already has. The most important thing in the market is not to lose players. How can I find a better striker than Diego Costa? A better midfielder than (Nemanja) Matic? A better right-back than (Branislav) Ivanovic?

So, it appears that all that’s left to do is negotiate for Costa’s back-up, and Wheeler and Barlow write that Falcao’s representatives met with Chelsea to discuss terms on Friday.

Falcao is undoubtedly an excellent player—that one is a given—his worth is all just a case of whether or not he can pull himself out of this slump.

Under Mourinho’s watch, however, he’s in the right hands to do just that.

Paul Pogba

The Paul Pogba transfer saga has hit a brick wall—well, it was never going places originally, in truth.

Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea are believed to be in the hunt for the Juventus star’s signature, but the Blues could well be in the driving seat to get the deal over the line.

This is because the Serie A champions are reportedly plotting a £9 million move for Blues midfielder Oscar, according to John Cross of the Daily Mirror.

Such a small fee is rather staggering, though, as £9 million in today’s market for a player of Oscar’s quality is quite simply unheard of.

Bleacher Report’s Garry Hayes reflected on as much, saying Oscar is worth £9 million and Pogba:

Even so, Chelsea can use Juventus’ interest to their advantage by arranging a player-plus-cash deal for Pogba.

The Frenchman has an astronomical price tag on his head, but with Oscar, the Blues can make this far-fetched (and rather exhausting) transfer a reality.

Chelsea fans will want to see a marquee signing head through the Stamford Bridge doors to take them to the next level, and Pogba is certainly that.
