Gipson Skipping OTAs Due to Contract

Tuesday, May 26

After putting himself on the radar with a strong 2013 campaign, Gipson became a star in 2014, as he racked up six interceptions in just his third season out of Wyoming.

The undrafted signee is currently playing under an extremely modest contract, and in an attempt to show his desire for a new deal, he has decided to skip organized team activities, according to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport:

Gipson's tactic doesn't come as a major surprise since there is little incentive for him to risk anything without more security in his favor.

After he sat out voluntary OTAs previously, Browns head coach Mike Pettine expressed optimism that the organization would be able to strike a deal with Gipson eventually, per Jeff Schudel of the News-Herald:

Nothing has progressed on that front thus far, but Browns superstar cornerback Joe Haden doesn't envision the dispute stretching to training camp, according to Daryl Ruiter of 92.3 The Fan: "I don't think he's thinking about holding out of training camp. It's a business and sometimes when the players do their part of it, being a business it looks a little foggy. I think he's going to be OK. He understands what's going on. He’s going to be out there for training camp for sure."

Unless the Browns are willing to play ball and make a long-term commitment to Gipson, though, his holdout could potentially last for a long time.

Gipson is already among the premier safeties in the NFL, and it is tough to blame him for wanting to be paid like one.
