Prime Time Players Great Fit to Be Next WWE Tag Team Champions After Reunion

Aaron BowerMay 21, 2015

One of the most fascinating aspects of the upcoming WWE Tag Team Championship match at Elimination Chamber is the variety of teams in the match, both in terms of ability and experience.

You have The Lucha Dragons and Los Matadores, both high-flying teams, as well as Tyson Kidd fitting that bracket alongside his partner in Cesaro.

Cesaro and Big E are notable for their physicality and strength, whilst the freshness of some of the teams involved, including The New Day, makes for a hugely entertaining and enticing contest.

However, perhaps the most fascinating tag team in the match, especially when you consider their recent history, are The Prime Time Players. In fact, they'd be the perfect fit to be the next tag team champions in WWE over the next few months.

First and foremost, the fact that they are back together after a brief spell as singles competitors is great for them both. They both have a great chemistry when working together, and when working as babyfaces, they've proven themselves to be one of the most comedic, funny and interesting tag teams around.

Titus O'Neil in particular has that humorous edge that many in WWE seem to lack, and if the duo's recent promos mocking the other tag teams in the division were meant to be part of a push, they certainly caught people's eye.

They're an interesting team because they can back up their hilarity with some bruising, physical performances in the ring. We saw that this past week on Raw, when they cleaned out the entire ring after all of the participating tag teams at Elimination Chamber flooded the set.

Over the last few years, tag teams have often just been thrown together with little invention, thought or craft. O'Neil and Darren Young bounce off each other brilliantly, and they have all the makings of a championship-winning duo.

And it's the lack of depth in WWE's tag team division over the last few years that makes it all the more incredible that The Prime Time Players have never captured the gold. The middle of 2012 was perhaps their best run to date, but things that transpired away from the ring seemed to put a stop to any potential run with the belts.

Pinning Abraham Washington on The Prime Time Players as their manager was a shrewd move, but when Washington was released from his contract after telling an inappropriate joke on the air during an episode of Raw, it seemed to grind all of their momentum to a halt.

They were going great guns up to that point, but following Washington's release, they slid way down in the pecking order. Then, their split did neither of them any real favors.

There is a genuine sense of injustice that O'Neil and Young never got elevated to tag team champion status because of what happened there. Too often have they competed in matches for the titles and come up short. It's hard to think of a team who have lost more tag title matches without ever winning the gold on at least one occasion.

That needs to change now. With the strength WWE's tag team division now has all of a sudden, Tyson Kidd and Cesaro can feud with other teams in the division.

Maybe their time won't be at Elimination Chamber. In fact, with The New Day on the rise, it looks more and more unlikely by the week. Imagine the mic work you'd get with Xavier Woods and O'Neil alone. It would be television gold before the actual wrestling even took place.

But as we head toward the summer, The New Day may be in need of a new babyface team to feud with. The best choice would be The Prime Time Players, and it should culminate in them getting what they deserve: a run as tag champions.
