Stock Up, Stock Down for Mets' Top 10 Prospects for Week 7

Shale BriskinMay 21, 2015

The New York Mets are now 24-18 as we approach the middle of May. They struggled against the Chicago Cubs and got swept at Wrigley Field then played a lot better against the Milwaukee Brewers. They are currently in the middle of a four-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Down on the farm, some of the Mets' top prospects are now on the major league roster, including Kevin Plawecki, Dilson Herrera and Noah Syndergaard. The rest of the Mets' top prospects, though, are still playing in the minor leagues and hoping to become a part of the major league roster one day themselves.

Here are stock updates for the Mets' top 10 prospects.

10. Gabriel Ynoa, RHP, Binghamton Mets (Double-A)

1 of 10

2015 Statistics

7 GS, 2-2, 4.35 ERA, 17 BB, 26 K, 41.1 IP

Last Week's Statistics

1 GS, 0-1, 5 ER, 6 H, 3 BB, 3 K, 5.0 IP

Overview

One of the many great young arms in the Mets' organization is Gabriel Ynoa, who is on the Double-A Binghamton squad.

In his most recent start, Ynoa struggled and allowed five earned runs in five innings pitched. His walks are a bit of a concern, but he's been able to rack up a good number of strikeouts as well. Ynoa will look to continue his development and aim for a potential Triple-A promotion later in the season.

9. Matt Reynolds, SS, Las Vegas 51s (Triple-A)

2 of 10

2015 Statistics

39 G, .290/.354/.432, 2 HR, 26 RBI, 28 R, 7 SB

Last Week's Statistics

6 G, 6/25, 0 HR, 0 RBI, 2 R

Overview

With shortstop still a weakness for the Mets at the major league level, Matt Reynolds could be another option to turn to later in the season. Reynolds has had a solid season thus far with a .290 average and 26 RBI in 39 games.

Last week, Reynolds didn't drive in any runs, but he got on base a decent amount and scored a couple of runs.

Should any serious injuries occur to one of Wilmer Flores or Ruben Tejada, Reynolds would then be the most likely player the Mets would call up. But if everyone stays healthy, Reynolds will probably remain in Triple-A for most of the season.

8. Jhoan Urena, 3B, St. Lucie Mets (Single-A)

3 of 10

2015 Statistics

38 G, .229/.265/.286, 0 HR, 16 RBI, 10 R

Last Week's Statistics

7 G, 8/25, 0 HR, 1 RBI, 1 R

Overview

Jhoan Urena has not had a great start to his season so far but has gotten on base more recently over the past week. This will be Urena's first year playing an entire season—being that as a member of the short-season Single-A Brooklyn Cyclones last year, his season started in June. He hit .300 in 75 games in 2014, so hopefully he will start hitting better as the weather gets warmer.

7. Gavin Cecchini, SS, Binghamton Mets (Double-A)

4 of 10

2015 Season Statistics

30 G, .291/.350/.464, 3 HR, 17 RBI, 19 R

Last Week's Statistics

6 G, 6/24, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 R

Overview

Gavin Cecchini has had a solid start to his season and is coming off a good week that included a home run and three RBI.

After hitting just .247 last year with eight home runs and 56 RBI, this is certainly a nice start for Cecchini's first year of Double-A ball.

Look for Cecchini to develop more as a hitter and try to make his mark as the Mets' potential shortstop of the future.

Stock: Up

6. Dominic Smith, 1B, St. Lucie Mets (Single-A)

5 of 10

2015 Statistics

28 G, .212/.268/.279, 0 HR, 14 RBI, 12 R

Last Week's Statistics

7 G, 6/26, 0 HR, 6 RBI, 3 R

Overview

Dominic Smith has played better than the horrendous start his season got off to, but a .212 average and no home runs are disappointing for a former first-round pick. Hopefully, Smith will find his power stroke again and put together a better season this year.

Stock: Down

5. Marcos Molina, RHP, St. Lucie Mets (Single-A)

6 of 10

2015 Statistics

6 GS, 1-4, 4.41 ERA, 8 BB, 32 K, 32.2 IP

Last Week's Statistics

1 GS, 0-1, 6 ER, 11 H, 1 BB, 4 K, 5.2 IP

Overview

Marcos Molina has struggled recently on the mound and allowed six earned runs and 11 hits in his most recent start. Hopefully, this is just a bump in the road for Molina, who had a stellar campaign in 2014 that included a 7-3 record and a 1.77 ERA. Despite his struggles though, Molina has posted a very nice 4-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

4. Amed Rosario, SS, St. Lucie Mets (Single-A)

7 of 10

2015 Statistics

39 G, .260/.297/.367, 0 HR, 5 RBI, 16 R, 4 SB

Last Week's Statistics

7 G, 9/27, 0 HR, 1 RBI, 2 R

Overview

Amed Rosario's season has been decent so far, but he hit well in the past week to get his average up to .260. He is coming off a 2014 season that featured a .274 average and 41 runs scored. Rosario is just 19 years old, so he's still a long way from the major leagues, but if he has a big season this year, it would certainly help him move up the system that much quicker.

3. Michael Conforto, LF, St. Lucie Mets (Single-A)

8 of 10

2015 Statistics

39 G, .288/.351/.481, 7 HR, 24 RBI, 22 R

Last Week's Statistics

6 G, 8/24, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 4 R

Overview

Michael Conforto's season has gone very well so far, with seven home runs and 24 RBI already. He hit a home run and had eight hits in the past week.

In 163 at-bats last year at Single-A Brooklyn, Conforto was raking it in at the plate with a .331 average, three home runs and 19 RBI. The Mets' 2014 first-round pick should quickly turn into one of the Mets' most exciting offensive prospects.

Stock: Up

2. Brandon Nimmo, CF, Binghamton Mets (Double-A)

9 of 10

2015 Statistics

34 G, .297/.368/.420, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 13 R

Last Week's Statistics

2 G, 3/10, 0 HR, 0 RBI, 0 R

Overview

Brandon Nimmo has hit well so far this season with a .297 average and .368 OBP. However, he hasn't played since May 15 due to a sprained knee, as reported by Adam Rubin of ESPN New York. The team placed Nimmo on the disabled list on May 17. Hopefully, he will continue to hit well when healthy.

Stock: Even

1. Steven Matz, LHP, Las Vegas 51s (Triple-A)

10 of 10

2015 Statistics

7 GS, 4-2, 1.80 ERA, 19 BB, 54 K, 50.0 IP

Last Week's Statistics

1 GS, 0-1, 2 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 9 K, 7.2 IP

Overview

Steven Matz has put together a great season so far for Triple-A Las Vegas, which features a very hitter-friendly atmosphere. This makes Matz's numbers that much more impressive. He suffered a tough-luck loss in his last start despite giving up just two earned runs and three hits in 7.2 innings pitched.

Despite a bit of a concern with his walks, Matz certainly looks on track to join the Mets' major league roster sometime later this season. Exactly when during the season this ends up happening is unknown, but Matz has clearly shown that he is ready for the major leagues.
