Beatty Undergoes Surgery

The Giants confirmed in a team release that Beatty underwent surgery for a torn pectoral muscle suffered while lifting weights. The release also notes that he is expected to make a recovery in five to six months.
Beatty started all 16 games last season for the Giants and has been their primary starter at left tackle since the 2011 campaign. New York signed him to a five-year contract following the 2012 season with the hopes that he would lock down the left tackle position during quarterback Eli Manning’s prime.
Beatty struggled during the 2013 season (and broke his leg at the end of the year), but he still managed to bounce back and protect Manning for the entire 2014 campaign. He is a valuable part of the offensive line, but Rock's suggested time period means someone else will have to step up at the start of the 2015 schedule.
The Giants drafted tackle Ereck Flowers with the ninth overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft for depth along the offensive line, and his time could come earlier than some expected.
Until Beatty can return, Flowers may be relied on heavily. Fortunately for Manning, he is built like an NFL tackle at 6’6”, 329 pounds with the athleticism necessary to protect the quarterback’s blind side.
There will surely be some growing pains if he is forced to start right away because of Beatty’s injury, but Flowers is also expected to be a critical piece of New York’s core moving forward. Early experience would pay off in the long run.
