WWE Payback 2015: Updated Predictions for Each Match at Event

Aaron BowerMay 14, 2015

WWE's Payback event offers the company's many talents an opportunity to lay down a serious marker ahead of the fast-approaching SummerSlam show later this year.

With the opportunity for several feuds to get another airing after being played out at Extreme Rules, there are chances for revenge all across the card.

There are also a couple of new rivalries at Payback, including a pay-per-view debut for one star from NXT.

But how will the seven matches on the main show fare in terms of winners and losers? Let's take a look with some updated predictions for Payback.

Naomi and Tamina Snuka vs. The Bella Twins

1 of 7

The WWE have made the choice to go without a Divas Championship match on pay-per-view, which means instead we're left with a tag match.

That may split some fans on opinion, but given the impact Tamina Snuka has made since returning as Naomi's sidekick, it may not be such a bad move.

However, the women's division just seems to be down on its luck at the moment, and it's likely this match will be slotted in somewhere near the start of the night as filler.

Naomi is the only credible challenger for Nikki Bella's ever-extending run as Divas champion, so the WWE has to sort its ideas out after Payback.

In terms of what happens here though, don't be surprised if the heel duo pick up an upset victory.

The New Day vs. Cesaro and Tyson Kidd

2 of 7

If their recent rivalry is anything to go by, The New Day vs. Cesaro and Tyson Kidd should be a thoroughly enjoyable addition to the card at Payback.

Their contest at Extreme Rules was a good one, and it culminated in a shock victory for The New Day as they claimed the tag titles.

But what happens in the next installment of this feud? Well, the fact it's a 2-out-of-3 Falls match suggests that we're going to be in for plenty of twists and turns, as well as a lengthy, enjoyable contest.

As is often the case with these matches, expect it to go the distance in terms of all three falls.

And in terms of a winner, expect The New Day to get out of Payback with their tag titles just about intact. Having them drop them after a month or so seems unlikely, and with their heel persona growing by the week, now is not the time for them to drop the gold.

Ryback vs. Bray Wyatt

3 of 7

It almost feels as if we haven't had as much buildup or hype around this match as we maybe should have.

Bray Wyatt has been quiet since losing to The Undertaker at WrestleMania, and hopes were high that when he did start an active feud again, it would help to restore his prominence.

Yet Ryback just doesn't feel like the right kind of opponent for Wyatt in this instance. There's little meaning behind the feud, and it all feels like it was thrown together in an 11th-hour Creative meeting.

The result is inevitable, you feel. Wyatt simply needs to go over on Ryback here for the good of his main event prospects, which at the moment, seem to be dangling by a thread.

Dolph Ziggler vs. Sheamus

4 of 7

Dolph Ziggler and Sheamus had an entertaining match at Extreme Rules last month, and hopes will therefore be high that they can repeat that at Payback.

Sheamus' return to TV has been a decent one, even if he came up short against Ziggler at Extreme Rules with that ill-fated and infamous stipulation.

The trouble is, like most matches on the card at Payback, the bout has suffered from a serious lack of storytelling.

Yes, they square off every week on Raw and SmackDown. But without any subplots or stories to keep fans on top of the feud, it feels a bit timid.

Sheamus lost to Ziggler last time in a snappy victory for The Show Off. This could be the backdrop for Sheamus to get his revenge.

King Barrett vs. Neville

5 of 7

Much like Dolph Ziggler and Sheamus, King Barrett and Neville have been given little opportunity to flesh out a story ahead of their match at Payback.

Sure, they clashed in the King of the Ring finals and then again on Raw, but where's the background to their feud?

Nonetheless, the two Englishmen have had some enjoyable bouts, and this looks set to be another one to add to the collection.

Picking a winner here is tough—not least because there's a valid reason for either man to emerge the victor.

However, you get the feeling that big things are in the pipeline for Neville, especially after he picked up a disqualification win against John Cena on Raw this past week.

That run could continue here with a win against King Barrett.

John Cena vs. Rusev

6 of 7

John Cena and Rusev haven't been interacting anywhere near enough as fans would have liked in the buildup to Payback.

Regardless of that, the fact that Rusev interfered in Cena's match against Neville on Raw before doling out a savage beating did at least inject some enthusiasm and interest into the contest.

But even with Rusev getting the upper hand on Raw, it all seems highly inevitable that Cena is going to make it three defeats in a row on pay-per-view for Rusev.

If that does happen, where does it leave the Russian? Do the WWE have some solid, worthwhile long-term plans up its sleeve for a guy who was built around being unbeatable?

Having him say "I Quit!" will only serve to make him look even weaker too.

Seth Rollins vs. Randy Orton vs. Roman Reigns vs. Dean Ambrose

7 of 7

Almost a year removed from the night Seth Rollins single-handedly broke up The Shield on Raw, Payback will see all three members of that faction lock horns in a major championship match.

That's not forgetting Randy Orton too, which means that four of the WWE's hottest talents will all be in the ring at the same time, which should see sparks fly.

Dean Ambrose's involvement in the match was seen as a real curveball two weeks ago, and it gives The Lunatic Fringe the chance to show what he can do in the big matches on pay-per-view.

But will the WWE pull off an even bigger shock and have Ambrose win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship? It seems highly unlikely.

What seems more likely is that Rollins will once again exploit his security and The Authority to retain his title and hop away into the night.

And that will only further ramp up his position as the undisputed No. 1 heel on the WWE roster, which builds nicely toward an impending return for Brock Lesnar.
