Deron Williams: Latest News, Rumors and Speculation on Nets Star's Future

Mike ChiariMay 12, 2015

After one of the worst seasons of his NBA career, point guard Deron Williams has become an albatross of sorts for the Brooklyn Nets. While the organization may wish to cut ties with him, doing so won't be easy.

Nets Unlikely to Buy Out Williams

Tuesday, May 12

Williams is a three-time NBA All-Star, but after averaging just 13.0 points and 6.6 assists per game in 2014-15, he is no longer the player the Nets thought they acquired in 2011.

According to NBA.com's David Aldridge, though, Brooklyn probably won't buy out the 30-year-old guard's contract, since it isn't interested in essentially giving him $43 million in exchange for nothing.

While a buyout isn't likely, Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News sees the Utah Jazz as a potential landing spot if it unexpectedly comes to fruition:

Williams became a star in Utah, and it would be interesting to see if he could return to that form with a young, talented Jazz team.

It's clear the Nets don't think it will happen in Brooklyn, as head coach Lionel Hollins doesn't view Williams as a top player at this juncture, per ESPN.com's Mike Mazzeo:

"

He's not a franchise player anymore. He's a good player, he's a solid player, but I don't think he's a franchise player anymore. That's just my opinion. He's a good player. I'm proud of the way he's bounced back and played, and there's so much pressure on him to be a franchise player, and everybody talks about a franchise player, but we need to have a franchise team.

"

Hollins' comments may seem harsh, but based on Williams' production over the past couple of years, it is difficult to argue with his opinion.

Williams simply hasn't been a good fit in Brooklyn, but his contract is so bloated the Nets may have no choice other than to continue trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.
