LeBron James' Role With 76ers Discussed by HC Nick Nurse After Contract in NBA Free Agency

Philadelphia 76ers head coach Nick Nurse indicated this week that LeBron James will be the team's de facto point guard during the 2026-27 NBA season.

Appearing on the Takeoff with John Clark podcast, Nurse provided some insight into how he plans to utilize James, saying, "He is an offense creator. He is certainly a guy that will bring the ball up the floor and try to create for himself and others. He is really good for others."

After he made the decision to end his eight-year run with the Los Angeles Lakers, the 41-year-old James instantly became the most sought-after free agent on the open market.

He considered multiple teams, but ultimately settled on the 76ers, who had recently made a big splash by acquiring five-time All-Star Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics.

James and Brown join what was already a strong core made up of 2023 NBA MVP Joel Embiid, two-time All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey and 2025 No. 3 overall draft pick VJ Edgecombe.

With that starting five, the Sixers could be a force to be reckoned with next season, and they likely gave LeBron his best opportunity to chase a fifth career NBA championship.

For as talented as the 76ers' roster is, there are plenty of question marks attached to it, including the durability of some key players, whether there is enough depth off the bench, whether there is enough shooting and whether players who are used to being superstars can put their egos aside for the betterment of the team.

The latter question shouldn't be a huge issue for James, as he has never shied away from being a playmaker and putting his teammates in position to succeed.

That is evidenced by the fact that he has acted as a point guard many times throughout his career, averaging 7.4 assists per game and ranking fourth on the all-time NBA assists list with 12,016.

Maxey, Brown and even Edgecombe could be capable of bringing the ball up the court and being a distributor as well, and that level of versatility could prove to be the Sixers' greatest strength this coming season.
