Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Kevin De Bruyne and Petr Cech Rumours

Stuart NewmanMay 9, 2015

Manchester United have reportedly been given the green light to sign Wolfsburg sensation Kevin de Bruyne, although his capture will come at a hefty price.

According to George Bellshaw of Metro, the Bundesliga outfit will let their star man go, but only for the full value of his contract—believed to be around the £58 million mark.

United recently secured the services of PSV Eindhoven’s Memphis Depay, and that could be reason enough for them to stop shopping for attacking midfielders. Stan Collymore certainly thinks so, as he exclusively told Bleacher Report that the Dutchman can be the club’s new No. 10:

However, De Bruyne may well be worth pursuing.

Despite being somewhat of a flop during his time at Chelsea, the Belgian has risen from strength to strength since his permanent switch to the German top flight.

He’s become the king of the assist, setting up 24 goals in all competitions this season—per WhoScored.com—and finding the net 15 times himself to boot.

It’s not just that, though, as De Bruyne has quite simply evolved as a player in all aspects.

While he was undoubtedly a player with talent at Stamford Bridge, several areas of his game just weren’t tuned finely enough—the final pass or in front of goal, for example.

That’s all changed now, however, and although Jose Mourinho doesn’t get a lot wrong, his decision to let De Bruyne go isn’t one he’ll look back on as one of his best in management.

The Chelsea boss’ loss could well prove to be Manchester United’s gain, then, and the Red Devils will be boosted by De Bruyne opening up to the possibility of leaving Wolfsburg to German publication Kicker—as reported by the Daily Mail: "You never know what will happen in football. A club might step in and make an offer that pleases Wolfsburg and also makes me happy.

"Right now, I say that I will stay in Wolfsburg. But I don't like it when players say they'll stay no matter what and are gone after the first offer."

De Bruyne is under contract in Germany until 2019, but should United come in with an astronomical offer for his services, Wolfsburg would likely accept.

It’s up to manager Louis van Gaal to decide whether or not parting with close to £60 million is a justifiable expense.

Petr Cech

While Manchester United need to improve several areas of their squad, one position that doesn’t need altering is between the posts.

David De Gea has been outstanding for the Red Devils, but Van Gaal may have to line up a replacement goalkeeper with Real Madrid reportedly sniffing around for his signature, per Sky Sports programme Revista De La Liga's Graham Hunter.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Hugo Lloris looks the perfect candidate for the job, but Chelsea stopper Petr Cech could also be up for grabs.

That’s according to Jamie Redknapp of Sky Sports—via Metro’s Bellshaw—who said United might look to bring the Czech goalkeeper to Old Trafford for £10 million in the summer:

“United could get someone like Petr Cech in for a couple of seasons and have Bale in their team—what an addition that would be.”

The 32-year-old’s chances have been few and far between for Chelsea this season, but it’s safe to say that he still has plenty to offer at the top level.

It’s luring him to United that will be tough for Van Gaal, should De Gea leave the club.

Not only will Mourinho be reluctant to sell Cech to a title rival, but the man himself didn’t seem too keen on the idea when the question was posed on Twitter:

Time will tell as to whether United can secure the services of the veteran stopper, but he’d certainly be a big scalp if he makes the switch.

Still, the main focus will be keeping De Gea at Manchester United, as the club look to restore their status as one of the world’s best sides.
