Chelsea Transfer News: Huge Deals Targeted by Jose Mourinho in Latest Rumours
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is ready to reunite with one of his former Real Madrid defenders. The Blues are reportedly willing to pay £14.5 million for Portuguese full-back Fabio Coentrao, according to Metro's Lee Thomas-Mason.
Coentrao is apparently being considered as a replacement for Filipe Luis, the ex-Atletico Madrid man who's been a major disappointment since arriving at Stamford Bridge last summer. Now the energetic Brazilian defender is apparently keen on an early exit from the Premier League champions.

Coentrao makes sense and not only as a replacement for Luis. He's also a highly versatile and experienced defender capable of filling in anywhere across the back line.
The 27-year-old can play either side at full-back and even slide inside as an emergency centre-back. That level of flexibility is good news for Mourinho.
Chelsea's rock-solid defence has been the necessary foundation of their league title win. But while the core group is very strong, quality reserves are in short supply.
If Luis leaves, depth will be stretched further, especially at full-back. Cesar Azpilicueta and Branislav Ivanovic are quality starters, but there's little else at the position. At least young Frenchman Kurt Zouma provides cover for the solid central partnership of John Terry and Gary Cahill.

Adding Coentrao would further boost the strongest area of Chelsea's powerful squad.
Pedro a £22 Million Target
While links to Coentrao make sense, reported interest in Pedro Rodriguez is more surprising. Still, Spanish website Fichajes.net (link in Spanish) suggests Chelsea may spend €30 million on the prolific Barcelona forward (h/t Daily Star's Jonathan Green).
Despite losing his place along Barca's star-studded forward line this season, Pedro still has the quality to improve Chelsea's attack. But he doesn't quite fit the profile of a typical Mourinho signing.

The Blues gaffer tends to prefer more physically robust options at every level of the team. But diminutive speedster Pedro, who stands just 5'7", is certainly no powerhouse.
Chelsea already have physically stout athletes out on the flanks, in the form of Willian and January signing Juan Cuadrado. But neither is particularly prolific, certainly not as threatening as Pedro has been in front of goal.
What he offers is the lightning pace, clever movement and guile to be an asset as a counter-attacking weapon. Like all Mourinho teams, this Chelsea vintage are at their dynamic best on the break.
With his former Barcelona team-mate Cesc Fabregas available to thread typically imaginative and accurate through passes, Pedro wouldn't find goals hard to come by at Stamford Bridge. What he won't find easy is earning additional minutes of playing time in a Barca team where Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar Jr. are currently running riot in attack.
Adding a little more firepower may help Mourinho's team take the next step in the UEFA Champions League, following a very disappointing campaign in Europe's premier club competition this season.
Pedro and Coentrao represent smart possible signings for a squad that only needs to be filled out, rather than bloated with star power, ahead of next season.
