Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Sirius XM NFL Radio provided comments from Cardinals general manager Steve Keim, who spoke about the move:
On Tuesday, the Patriots announced they had released a trio of players that included Dennard. The team drafted him in the seventh round of the 2012 draft, and he appeared in 29 games with 20 starts, 20 passes defended and five interceptions.
Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald noted that members of the Patriots questioned Dennard's "work ethic and commitment to the game" and also pointed out the off-field troubles that have plagued the 25-year-old:
"Dennard had off-field issues, too. He was found guilty in February 2013 of assaulting a police officer before the April 2012 draft, and he also violated the terms of his probation in July 2013 after being arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. Dennard served 38 days of a 60-day jail sentence, was placed on three years probation and given 200 hours of community service.
"
A move to Arizona does give Dennard a chance to start fresh with an organization that has had success with troubled defensive backs. Tyrann Mathieu was dismissed from LSU's football team in 2012, was taken in the third round by Arizona in the 2013 draft and has started 17 games in two years.
Dennard will also get the chance to serve as depth in Arizona's secondary after Antonio Cromartie signed with the New York Jets as a free agent earlier this offseason. The former Nebraska standout was entering the final year of his rookie deal with the Patriots before being released.
