Chelsea Transfer News: Gareth Bale, Antoine Griezmann 2 of 7 Rumoured Targets

Nick AkermanMay 5, 2015

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho isn't resting on his laurels after securing the Premier League title, reportedly eyeing seven additions to his triumphant squad, six of which are currently stationed in La Liga.

Matt Barlow of the Daily Mail believes Mourinho will try to raid former club Real Madrid for Gareth Bale, Raphael Varane and Fabio Coentrao. Barlow also notes Chelsea are "keen admirers" of Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann and Barcelona's Pedro, while Getafe goalkeeper Vicente Guaita could be brought in as back-up to Thibaut Courtois.

John Cross of the Mirror also notes the side's interest in the same six players, but adds Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette to an exciting list of targets.

Cross suggests Mourinho will be given the backing to improve his squad after inking a contract extension. Although seven targets have been outlined, one in each position is likely to prove enough for the English champions, particularly with UEFA's financial fair play rules in full swing.

Mourinho is the master of moving unwanted players on for hefty prices, so he will likely fund any expenditure by axing those he deems unneeded. Barlow pinpoints left-back Filipe Luis, while Cross indicates Petr Cech and Oscar may be cut to free up vital funds.

Former Manchester United right-back and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville believes Chelsea should go all-out for Bale in the summer: "If he becomes available, if Chelsea win that battle, and say they lost Oscar or Ramires and got him for a net cost of £25million, I think the other teams are in trouble for the next few years, I really do," said Neville, per Sky Sports' Monday Night Football show.

Chelsea's consistency and ability to grab results in difficult circumstances makes them worthy title winners this season. Mourinho has quality replacements for all positions and rarely sees the balance of his team disrupted when a key player is injured.

The Blues' style may have become less entertaining and more rugged in the last few weeks, but they wouldn't have wrapped up the silverware if Mourinho didn't know how to employ specific game plans for each opponent. Was the 0-0 draw with Arsenal entertaining? Barely, but that point proved key in confirming the trophy.

We've seen Mourinho sell David Luiz for £50 million, Juan Mata for £37.1 million and Andre Schurrle for £24 million in recent times. He's brought in experienced winners such as Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas, while also targeting youth stars like Kurt Zouma. Mourinho's ability to strike the correct balance is what defines this Chelsea team, whether you're judging the squad's personnel or his tactics for each match.

B/R UK's Garry Hayes recently outlined his dream team for the side ahead of next season:

Targets such as Bale, Griezmann and Lacazette would provide the club with additional attacking threat, while Mourinho considers Varane "the best young central defender in the world," per Yahoo (h/t Sky Sports). These are players who would not only make Chelsea stronger in the present, but could help Mourinho build successful teams for the future.

Other Premier League clubs will be already looking at the west London side knowing they have major catch-up to work through. Should the aforementioned reports turn out to be true, Chelsea will possess the power to dominate domestically for years to come.
