John Carlson Retires: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Mike ChiariMay 5, 2015

After seven NFL seasons, Arizona Cardinals tight end John Carlson announced Tuesday that he is retiring from the sport of football.

On the heels of his decision, the 30-year-old former Notre Dame standout released a statement, per Darren Urban of the Cards' official website:

"

After much thought and consideration, my wife Danielle and I know that this is the best decision for us. I was blessed to play seven seasons in the NFL for three tremendous organizations—the Cardinals, Vikings and Seahawks. I will always treasure the experiences and relationships made during that time, but I'm also very excited about the next phase of my life and what's ahead.

As pointed out by Urban, Carlson's retirement was unexpected because he had been working out with the team:

Kent Somers of AZCentral.com added further perspective:

According to Mike Jurecki of Fox Sports 910, Carlson's departure will save the Cardinals a bit of money against the salary cap:

The former second-round pick started 12 games for Arizona's playoff team in 2014, catching 33 passes for 350 yards and one touchdown. With the Cardinals bringing in little competition at the position, he was expected to serve in that role once again in 2015.

Arizona will now have to turn to other options, though, while Carlson will explore life after football.

Carlson seemingly had all the makings of a Pro Bowl tight end early in his career, as he totaled over 1,200 yards (1,201) and 12 touchdowns combined in his first two seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.

He was never again able to reach that level of production but continued to be a solid contributor at each of his stops.

While Carlson likely could have continued to play and collect paychecks, it is obvious he is ready to move on to the next chapter of his life. It is certainly unfortunate for the Cardinals and their fans, but the big tight end cannot be faulted for following his heart.
