The Deal That Could Bring Rubio Over Here Tomorrow. Is Kahn a Genius?

Timber WolfAug 30, 2009

I am generally impressed with everything that a general manager will say. Usually, it's something that will instill faith into a fanbase that is struggling to even make the playoff's, or it's something that will instill confidence into a fanbase of a respective playoff team to ensure that that team get's to the championship.

David Kahn is a GM that says very good things, and it's until now, that we can see that he's for real.

When a GM or anybody says something, if it sounds confident and convincing, people are quick to overlook even the smallest non-accomplishments or achievements because they are blinded by the bigger picture.

In long words turned longer, David Kahn said he will do everything in his power to get Rubio here this season, and it's only until now, that we can truly see that he is doing EVERYTHING.

For Ricky Rubio, the story of the offseason has been the buyout situation. There are many numbers to crunch, and while we don't have the details to firmly say a number, we can assume that the buyout is a large number, otherwise Rubio would be here already. So let's get into David Kahn himself.

David Kahn has been criticized, ridiculed, and mocked for drafting two point guards back to back. In some eyes, that was a dumb move because the Wolves were in need of a shooter.

Because Stephen Curry was drafted after Flynn and Rubio, people could not understand why he was passed up by the Wolves. And despite Curry being a sharpshooter and a "point guard", David Kahn drafted Wayne Ellington, which ultimately gave them a shooter who performed just as well as Stephen Curry.

One week, it would seem possible that Rubio will be in a Wolves uniform this season, and the next, he's already signed a deal with another Euroleague team.

And while DKV has received an offer that they are willing to take, who happens to be their mortal enemy, the Wolves have an offer that DKV just has to look at.

That offer is reportedly something along the lines of this:

  1. Up to $2.2 Million through various endorsements/loans.
  2. 2 Exhibition games (one date already targeted on October 10, 2010) vs the Timberwolves in MN and overseas. Ultimately grossing $750,000 each, or $1,500,000 towards DKV, also gaining positive exposure to the whole world.
  3. Buying out Henk Norel's contract with another $500,000, adding Ricky Rubio's contract as well, thus contributing $1 million to DKV.
  4. Ricky Rubio contributing out of pocket. Maybe 3-4 million.
  5. Not giving Rubio to the enemy. It's likely that Rubio will be sent to a rival European team, which means that they can end up playing each other in various tournaments. The tournaments have high payouts to the winning teams, so any advantage that DKV can have is great. This move can save and make them money in the long run.
  6. Any other creativity that we don't know about.

I have to say that if this is mostly the deal, David Kahn is a genius, and I speak on all Wolves fans when I say, "David Kahn is GM of the year," regardless of what the NBA says.

But do not worry if this deal is within the rules. The NBA's chief lawyer Adam Silver, has been involved in initial meetings between Kahn, Glen Taylor and Ricky Rubio's agent Dan Fegan. He has been involved and consulted almost through every process.

It has been reported, that DKV will announce which deal they will retain for the rights to Ricky Rubio tomorrow. Either way it goes, the Wolves will finally know what the future holds for the Spanish sensation.

"We will do everything we can, within the rules," Kahn said the day after the draft.

But in our quest to get Rubio, is "everything" enough?

Thanks for Reading!
