Brian Mihalik to Philadelphia Eagles: Full Draft-Pick Breakdown

Bryn SwartzMay 2, 2015

With their final selection in the 2015 draft, the Philadelphia Eagles took a flier on perhaps the biggest player in the entire draft class, at least from a height standpoint. That would be Boston College defensive end Brian Mihalik, who stands 6'9 and weighs about 300 pounds.

Mihalik recorded 86 tackles, including 16 for a loss, throughout his college career. He also recorded 8.5 sacks, an interception and three forced fumbles. He used his ridiculous height and otherworldly wingspan to knock down seven passes at the line of scrimmage.

As an overall athlete, Mihalik tested off the charts. In fact, according to the 3sigmaathlete breakdown by Zach Whitman, Mihalik tested as the eighth-best athlete in the entire draft class by his measureables and testing at the NFL's Scouting Combine, including second-best on the defensive line.

The 3sigmaathlete breakdown shows that he tested in the 97th percentile for his position, meaning he's better than about 32 of every 33 players to play defensive line.

His most impressive trait is his speed, as he ran a 4.88 in the 40-yard dash. Quite simply, players standing 6'9 and weighing close to 300 pounds are not supposed to be able to move that fast—ever. With his 34 ¾-inch arms, it's going to be fun watching Mihalik swat down passes from opposing quarterbacks at the line of scrimmage.

Now, first he has to make the team, of course. The guess right here is that he'll be a prime candidate to spend his rookie season on the practice squad. Teams usually use their late-round pick to take a flier on a player who might test off the charts in one category, like Mihalik, but need lots of work refining their tools for the next level.

At defensive end in 2015, the Eagles have Fletcher Cox, Cedric Thornton, Vinny Curry, Taylor Hart and Brandon Bair clearly ahead of Mihalik on the depth chart.

Cox is one of the most productive defensive lineman in the National Football League and should be the face of the Eagles defense for many years. Thornton is a terrific run-stopper and recently signed a one-year deal.

Curry has been a backup throughout his whole career, but he recorded nine sacks on limited snaps in 2014. Hart didn't set foot on the field once during his 2014 rookie season, and Bair played well in limited time in 2014, although he's also entering his age-31 season in 2015.

But even if the Eagles' newest draft pick doesn't find his way onto the team's roster in 2015, he's an ideal candidate for the practice squad, and in a year or two, if Thornton and Curry have left via free agency, Mihalik could find his way onto the field on obvious passing downs.

Mihalik will need to bulk up, as he's been listed at anywhere from 285 to 300 pounds. Considering his insane height, he could look to put on anywhere from 15 to 25 pounds of muscle. More weight will also help against powerful NFL offensive lineman.

That could be a concern for Mihalik, as the scouting report for Mihalik on NFL.com says that he struggled against Florida State tight end Nick O'Leary, a significantly smaller player.

The Eagles' fifth straight defensive player to close out Chip Kelly's first draft in complete control of the team, it'll be interesting to see whether the massive Mihalik ever develops into a legitimate NFL defensive end. If not, there's never an issue taking a flier on a player with his athletic ability and measurables, especially in the seventh round.
