Quinten Rollins to Green Bay Packers: Full Draft-Pick Breakdown

Justis MosquedaMay 1, 2015

It would appear that the Green Bay Packers and general manager Ted Thompson have a type for this draft class. In the first round, with the 30th overall selection, the Packers took Damarious Randall of Arizona State. He is a basketball convert who is viewed as a safety and cornerback hybrid after playing two years of major college football.

With the Packers' second pick, the 62nd overall selection, the squad took Quinten Rollins of Miami (Ohio), who is a basketball convert and played one year of major college football for the Red Hawks. This trend goes even further, though, back to last draft when Thompson turned in a sixth-round card for Demetri Goodson, who played basketball at Gonzaga before switching to football for Baylor.

Green Bay has a need at cornerback. They don't have a need at safety. Tramon Williams and Davon House, the second and third outside corners on the roster opposite of Sam Shields, both left Wisconsin in the offseason. Williams signed with the Browns, while House was added to the Jaguars.

Outside of Sam Shields, who just signed a long-term contract last offseason, Goodson, who has virtually no NFL experience, is the only other true outside cornerback on the roster. Micah Hyde and Casey Hayward are solid slot players, but both lack the high-end speed to play on the boundary on an island.

This is important, as defensive coordinator Dom Capers plays an aggressive, blitzing style of defense. His cornerbacks are going to need to be able to recover, as they will be put on those islands often.

When looking at the starting safeties, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix was drafted in the first round out of Alabama last season, winning the free-safety gig around the middle of his rookie year. Morgan Burnett, the strong safety on the squad, started coming along as he was able to transition into a box role with Clinton-Dix's ability to play single-high.

Are the Packers volume drafting cornerbacks, hoping that one sticks as the starter opposite of Shields?

In Rollins' one year on the football team, he was able to notch seven interceptions, leading to his victory of the MAC Defensive Player of the Year award. When you watch him on film, you think he's an amazing talent, but the combine caused some concerns for him.

According to Mock Draftable, he ranked in the 24th percentile of cornerbacks since 1999 with his 40-yard dash of 4.57. When you're talking about his recovery speed, that's a huge issue. His 10-yard split of 1.61 ranks in the bottom 10 percent, causing even more fear of that specific trait.

If nothing else, the Packers have flexibility in their backfield. At slot corner, Rollins, Hayward, Hyde and Randall should be able to compete for a gig. On the outside, the same could be said of Rollins, Goodson and Randall. Rollins, Hyde and Randall can also play safety in a pinch, for three-safety sets or in an emergency if Clinton-Dix or Burnett should go down.

I don't think there's a specific plan for these individuals, but there is a plan: Let them settle it themselves in camp.

The Packers have long been a draft-and-develop squad, and the fuel of development is competition. They still have a fairly large need at inside linebacker, but with Benardrick McKinney of Mississippi State, Eric Kendricks of UCLA and Denzel Perryman of Miami going between Green Bay's first and second selections, they took film talent over a need based draft approach.

This is a pick that can't be judged on draft day for impact. We're going to need some time to fully evaluate how this roster shapes up in the secondary.
