WWE Superstar of the Week for May 2

The Doctor Chris MuellerMay 2, 2015

It's been a very exciting week in the land of World Wrestling Entertainment. Not only did Extreme Rules meet and exceed expectations, but we also got the return of the King of the Ring tournament on the WWE Network.

On top of all that, SmackDown managed to deliver one of the best episodes in weeks thanks to a great Tag Team Championship match and a stellar main event between Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose.

A lot of people stepped up and produced some great matches, but only one person can be the Superstar of the Week.

Monday Night RAW

Honorable Mention: Tyson Kidd, Cesaro and The New Day

The tag team division has been the subject of debate for a long time. It seems like WWE will put some effort into building it up, and then drop the ball a few months later.

Right now, things seem to be on the upswing. Tyson Kidd, Cesaro and The New Day stood out this week because of two great matches at Extreme Rules and SmackDown.

The New Day has really started to blossom since their heel turn. Kidd and Cesaro didn't really have a defined face turn, but the crowd seems ready to embrace them anyway.

Tag team wrestling has never been WWE's top priority, but it's great to see some of the better groups finally starting to get some time in the spotlight.

The tag title match almost stole the show at Extreme Rules, and the rematch on SmackDown proved that they didn't just get lucky with one good performance.

Honorable Mention: Neville

Ever since he made his debut the night after WrestleMania, Neville has been impressing audiences with his incredible high-flying and wrestling skills.

The fact that he has been so well received is especially good for the English Superstar since he wasn't brought up with much hype. All we got was one video package the night of his debut.

His first pay-per-view match against Bad News Barrett was one of the best parts of Extreme Rules, and their second encounter during the King of the Ring finals was just as good.

The fact that a new talent was pushed all the way to the last round of the tournament is a great sign that Neville has a bright future on the main roster.

With time, fans who are not familiar with his indy work or NXT run will see just how good he is at every aspect of wrestling. He is more than just a spot monkey.

It will be a lot of fun to watch him over the next few months to see exactly how WWE plans to use his unique talents. Let's just hope he gets a little more mic time in the coming weeks.

Honorable Mention: Naomi

Naomi is one of the most physically gifted Divas on the roster, and her recent heel turn has given her a chance to branch out and explore new aspects of her character.

Her match at Extreme Rules was good, but she wasn't able to win the Divas Championship. However, it looks like she is still the top contender after defeating Brie Bella on Raw.

Reinventing yourself is not always easy. When fans are used to seeing someone act a certain way for a long time, they are not always open to the idea of that person suddenly changing their whole personality.

The great thing about Naomi's transition is that it feels organic. She was fed up with not being pushed after defeating both Bellas on multiple occasions, so she took matters into her own hands.

Her new entrance music and overall look also helped separate her from the smiling Funkadactyl she used to play. Her promos have definitely improved since she made the turn, and she easily adapted to using more devious tactics in the ring.

The Divas division needs more women like Naomi.

Superstar of the Week for May 2: King Bad News Barrett

After not being able to challenge Daniel Bryan for the Intercontinental Champion at Extreme Rules, Bad News Barrett ended up getting something even better.

The King of the Ring returned for the first time in five years, and Barrett won the crown Tuesday after an incredible match with Neville.

Barrett has had several pushes in his career, but injuries and other factors always seem to bring his ascension to a screeching halt.

Winning the KOTR tournament has helped the careers of several Superstars over the years, and if WWE allows Barrett to capitalize on the win by continuing to push him, he will become a main event player in no time.

It's not just that fact that he won the tournament that makes Barrett the Superstar of the Week. It's also the fact that he competed in four matches across three days and looked good in every single one of them.

His loss to Neville at Extreme Rules was quickly forgotten when he defeated the high-flyer on Tuesday, but both bouts were very fun to watch.

It will be interesting to see if Barrett wears the crown and uses the King title or if he simply touts the victory while his current gimmick remains unchanged. Either way, this could be the start of a great run for the new king.

Due to Extreme Rules being such a great show, a lot of other people deserve to be acknowledged for the efforts, but there is only so much room for honorable mentions. Here is a list of others who came close to making the cut:

  • Big Show and Roman Reigns for exceeding all expectations with their Last Man Standing match.
  • Seth Rollins for being one of the best performers every time he steps in the ring.
  • Dean Ambrose and Luke Harper for their entertaining Chicago Street Fight and Ambrose's match against Rollins on SmackDown.
  • John Cena and Rusev for making a variation of the Strap match actually worth watching.
  • Sheamus for quickly becoming one of the best heels in the company.
  • Dolph Ziggler for always giving everything he has in every performance.
