PSG Transfer News: Paul Pogba Fee Named Amid Rumours of Juventus Agreement

Matt JonesApr 30, 2015

Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus have reportedly agreed an €80 million fee for the transfer of France midfielder Paul Pogba.

That’s according to an exclusive report from Goal, which claims a bid has been accepted by the Bianconeri but that there is “no guarantee” the player will decide to make the switch from Italy to the French capital.

The piece claims meetings have already taken place between PSG officials and the 22-year-old’s representatives:

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi met with Pogba and his representatives in Monte Carlo earlier this week but a financial package for the player was not agreed.

And it is understood Pogba is willing to bide his time and evaluate other offers which he believes will come his way this summer.

"

Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona have all been linked with the Frenchman, per Nicholas McGee of Goal, who has grown into one of the best midfielders in the world this season.

Here’s a closer examination of why Pogba is in demand with so many illustrious names:

It seems PSG have stolen a march on the rest of the player’s potential suitors, however. Indeed, as noted by the piece, the club’s president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, has already admitted there has been contact with the player.

“Why did I talk with Pogba? Because he’s a great talent, he’s French, from Paris even,” he told French media. “That said all the big clubs want him.”

As noted by David Amoyal of Gianluca Di Marzio's website, it was a shift in stance from the PSG president, who is usually noncommittal when asked about Pogba:

You can certainly see why the Parc des Princes would be an enticing proposition for Pogba. As a local lad, to play for PSG would surely represent a childhood dream, as would spearheading the charge of France’s top side on both the domestic and European fronts.

But Ligue 1 isn’t quite as competitive as the Premier League or La Liga. While PSG are facing some stiff competition from Lyon for the league title this year, over the next five years, the financial clout of the Parisians will surely see them dominate the domestic landscape.

As noted by Bleacher Report’s Rob Pollard, Manchester City could certainly do with a midfielder of his calibre; they could potentially offer terms just as lucrative as PSG, as well as the prospect of playing domestic football of a much higher standard:

However, Juventus have taken a pretty staunch stance on the matter, and with Pogba penning a new long-term deal with the club last year, they are under little obligation to sell. That fact was noted by Bianconeri sporting director Giuseppe Marotta when discussing the meeting between Pogba and PSG's hierarchy.

“It was an occasional meeting,” he told reporters, relayed in Goal's exclusive report. “They spoke about football. We don't want to sell Paul.”

If Pogba was to move to PSG this summer, it would be excellent for his development. He’d become the central figure in a quality side, and you suspect Laurent Blanc would be tasked with building a team to cater for his broad skill set. But with so many clubs apparently waiting in the wings, it’d be a major surprise if this deal was seamlessly completed.

Juventus will be keen to keep hold of their prized asset and another season in Turin with this improving side would only serve to better Pogba as a player. But if bids of circa €80 million are indeed being lodged, the Bianconeri will find them very difficult to resist.
