Analysis
The question at this year's Kentucky Derby may not be if trainer Bob Baffert has a champion on his hands. Rather, the question heading into the race appears to be which one of his two contenders will inevitably take the title against a deep but perhaps overmatched field.
American Pharoah and Dortmund are the clear favorites, though the buzz coming into the race is that this is one of the deeper fields in recent memory. Indeed, American Pharoah, Dortmund, Materiality and Carpe Diem—four of the favorites—have won 17 of 19 total starts between them.
Not too shabby, eh?
Baffert can't be thrilled with American Pharoah's draw, of course, as the favorite will have to come from the outside to win the title. Still, he is a special horse.
"I have been doing this for 35 years, and he might be the best horse I've ever seen," bloodstock agent Gary Young said in a Churchill Downs release via USA Today. "He's simply like Michael Jordan and stays in the air like he did in his rookie year. He stays in the air longer than any horse, and you get the feeling that there's not one gear left, but he may have two, three or four gears."
That's high praise, indeed. And if American Pharoah comes from the outside to win, he'll certainly prove he's earned the plaudits.

Carpe Diem and Materiality's spots on the inside are tricky ones to overcome—though given Materiality's speed, the horse might be able to race out to an early start and avoid getting pinned too far inside. Carpe Diem was drawn with Materiality to his right.
Dortmund ended up with a solid draw, meanwhile, and won't have to worry about shooting out from the inside or making up ground from out wide. That makes Dortmund a very dangerous horse at the Derby.
On the inside, keep an eye on Mubtaahij and Firing Line. Both horses are nice contenders to keep in mind—as many folks are going to focus on Baffert's pair—but some of the horses with slightly longer odds represent very nice values, especially considering in less deep fields, they would be more highly regarded.
