EPL Results Week 34: Premier League Scores, Top Scorers and 2015 Table Tracker

Rory MarsdenApr 25, 2015

Manchester City moved into second place in the Premier League on Saturday, as they beat Aston Villa 3-2 courtesy of a late winner from Fernandinho.

The wealth of Premier League attention went to north London, however, as Chelsea saw out a 0-0 stalemate at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday to move 10 points clear at the summit.

Liverpool's slim UEFA Champions League hopes were all but crushed, as they drew 0-0 at West Brom, but Manchester United's 3-0 capitulation at Everton's hands may yet give the top-four race some life.

Sunday Recap

Arsenal brought an end to Chelsea's four-match winning streak on Sunday after holding the Blues to a 0-0 draw at the Emirates Stadium, going level on points with Manchester City as a result.

Kicca's Ian Stafford believes Jose Mourinho's sealed this season's title by avoiding defeat in north London but did take note of the Blues' unattractive way of getting things done:

That being said, if that is the title in Chelsea's grasp, Mourinho will care not for how it came to be, with Chelsea scoring one or fewer for the third game in succession.

Arsenal also have a "boring" streak of their own against the west London rivals, per OptaJoe, although theirs is far less encouraging than the opposition's:

With a point in hand from Sunday's result, Chelsea move 10 points clear of the rest of the pack with five games remaining in their domestic campaign, Liverpool being the highest-placed enemy still to come.

Arsenal have the advantage of a game in hand over City and can still hold high hopes of clinching second spot, although Sunday's stalemate effectively ends any slim hopes they might have held for the title.

Everton injected some crucial life into the Premier League campaign on Sunday thanks to a 3-0 rout of Manchester United that pushes the Toffees into the top half of the table for the first time in 2015.

James McCarthy, John Stones and Kevin Mirallas were each on target for the Goodison Park hosts as United suffered successive defeats for the first time since Louis van Gaal took over as manager at Old Trafford.

United remain seven points above Liverpool in fifth and will undoubtedly remain confident about taking a top-four finish, but there may be lurking concerns that the Red Devils are letting their foot off the gas of late.

Despite the gap between his side and the Merseysiders, Van Gaal insisted Liverpool can take some hope of cracking the top four thanks to United's loss, per The Independent's Ian Herbert:

Roberto Martinez's men were fully deserving of their triumph and operated fluidly on the counter-attack, making light work of any transitions from defence into attack.

Van Gaal was forced to admit as much, too, and noted this as the first time he felt his team had been genuinely made to look like the inferior outfit during his 11 months in charge, according to Match of the Day 2's Mark Chapman:

Saturday Recap

City looked to have thrown away at least two points on Saturday at the Etihad Stadium as they were pegged back from 2-0 down to 2-2 by an impressive Villa side.

But Fernandinho's 89th minute volley gave them a 3-2 win, and moved them up to second in the table, at least for now.

Brad Guzan gifted City the lead in the third minute as he cleared the ball straight to Sergio Aguero for the Argentine to fire home his 21st league goal of the season.

City then looked to be home and dry as Aleksandar Kolarov swept home a free-kick for 2-0 in the 66th minute, only for Tom Cleverley and Carlos Sanchez to bring Tim Sherwood's men back level.

They looked to have grabbed a vital point, but a scrambled corner was turned home by Fernandinho late on, and Villa left with nothing despite perhaps being deserving of more, per WhoScored.com's Martin Laurence:

Leicester continued their immense form as they look to avoid relegation, winning a tense encounter 1-0 against drop-rivals Burnley. The Clarets now sit bottom of the table with Nigel Pearson's men 17th.

Matty Taylor hit the post from a penalty that could have given Burnley the lead in the 59th minute, only for Jamie Vardy to scramble the eventual winner just a minute later.

The Foxes now look genuine contenders to survive the drop courtesy of their terrific recent run, an historic set of results, per Opta:

Hull City also gave themselves a boost in the race for survival as they deservedly beat Crystal Palace 2-0 away from home, thanks to a Dame N'Doye second-half double.

It is the first win since February for Steve Bruce's men, and they now sit in 16th place, a point clear of the drop zone.

QPR did themselves few favours in their own bid to stay in the Premier League as they drew 0-0 with out-of-form West Ham United, Charlie Austin missing a penalty.

Similarly, Sunderland could only draw 1-1 at Stoke City, Connor Wickham's first-minute strike cancelled out by Charlie Adam's strike before the break.

Newcastle's miserable form continued as they lost a seventh match in succession, going down 3-2 to Swansea at St James' Park.

Ayoze Perez gave the hosts the lead, but Nelson Oliviera headed an equaliser for the Swans, ahead of second-half goals from Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jack Cork.

Siem de Jong pulled one back late on, but another defeat for John Carver's team sees them slip closer to the relegation spots, although they have a number of teams between them and the drop zone.

Tottenham and Southampton played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at St Mary's, Spurs twice coming from behind to claim a point.

Graziano Pelle scored a double to put Saints in the lead in the 29th and 65th minutes, but Spurs returned to parity, first via Erik Lamela just before half-time, and then from Nacer Chadli's 70th minute strike.

There was some controversy surrounding Lamela's goal, as he seemed to deflect it home with his arm as he attempted a header, per B/R UK:

The draw sees sixth-placed Tottenham remain one point ahead of Saints in the race for European football next season.

Liverpool's 0-0 draw with West Brom was a largely dire match, the Reds showing very little quality for a side chasing Champions League qualification, per football writer Miguel Delaney:

Brendan Rodgers' side will now surely have to settle for the Europa League next season, as they are seven points back from the fourth-placed Red Devils.
