Roman Reigns vs. Big Show: Winner and Reaction from WWE Extreme Rules 2015

Mike ChiariApr 26, 2015

In his first pay-per-view bout since falling in the main event of WrestleMania 31, Roman Reigns got back on track by defeating Big Show in a Last Man Standing match at Extreme Rules Sunday night.

WWE showed fans how the match finished:

After the match, WWE posted an Instagram photo of the winner:

Earlier in the action, it was Reigns who was getting thrown through tables:

Once again, the Spanish announce table was put in harms way, as WWE Universe displayed:

John Layfield had one of the best lines of the night when talking about Big Show and all of the table usage, via NODQ.com:

Both Jim Ross and Mick Foley commented on Reigns after the match:

Reigns and Big Show have been at odds since the build toward Royal Rumble, and they have engaged in several matches on both Raw and SmackDown. The former powerhouse of The Shield has come out on top on most occasions, and Extreme Rules was no different.

It wasn't long ago that Reigns was at the pinnacle of WWE. He won the Royal Rumble to become the No. 1 contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and followed that up with a victory over Daniel Bryan at Fastlane.

The fast-rising star looked to be closing in on defeating Brock Lesnar for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania, but Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank contract to win the title, which knocked Reigns back down the card.

That led to Reigns rekindling his feud with Big Show. After the World's Largest Athlete cost Reigns a chance to become the No. 1 contender for the world title, their rivalry heated up in a big way.

During an episode of Raw in London, Big Show chokeslammed Reigns on top of a car:

After that, the giant downplayed the notion that Reigns might gain some measure of revenge at Extreme Rules, according to WWE Universe on Twitter:

In fact, Big Show did everything he could to poke and prod the 2014 Superstar of the Year. That included calling Reigns a bust and claiming that he would never live up to his immense potential.

Even Bo Dallas got in on the act by comparing Reigns to current Philadelphia Eagles and former Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow:

That narrative added some intrigue to the match, as it put the onus on Reigns to prove that he is the real deal and deserving of being one of WWE's next top stars.

It is a safe assumption that few were excited to see Reigns and Big Show lock horns once again since they have worked so many matches together over the past few months. With that said, the Last Man Standing stipulation was a new wrinkle that made it a bit more palatable.

Also, WWE managed to get more fans on Reigns' side due to the universal dislike for Big Show, so he may be trending in the right direction as far as crowd support is concerned.

Facing Big Show was a big step down compared to where Reigns was roughly a month ago, but it allowed him to pick up a victory over a veteran and put the WrestleMania 31 loss behind him.

Provided the feud is over and WWE is prepared to transition Reigns to something more substantial, the match at Extreme Rules served its purpose.
