Most Dramatic Sports Moments of the Week

Garrett BakerApr 24, 2015

This past week in sports has been dominated by the incredible starts to the playoffs in both the NHL and NBA.

While the MLB season is fully in swing, featuring brawls and walk-offs, it's hard to beat NHL playoff overtime games and heated NBA playoff battles that come down to the final whistle.

Here are the most dramatic moments in sports from the past week.

Giants Complete Sweep of Dodgers with Back-to-Back Walk-Offs

1 of 10

Heading into their first series against each other this year, the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers could not have been on more opposing trajectories. The Giants had lost nine of their previous 10, while their Southern California counterparts were riding a seven-game winning streak.

However, leave it to the defending World Series champions to break out of their slump against their oldest rivals. Relying on their signature style of staunch pitching, and with some extremely timed offense, the Giants swept L.A. in dramatic fashion.

Two walk-offs in a row provided the team with a much-needed momentum boost, and gave their fans something to cheer about.

Ducks Beat Jets in OT

2 of 10

The Anaheim Ducks had handled the Winnipeg Jets smoothly en route to a 2-0 series lead, but the Jets made things extremely tough in Game 3.

In front of the home crowd, Winnipeg drew first blood and held a 3-2 lead halfway through the second period. But Anaheim came back to tie the score not once but twice after that, sending the game into overtime tied at 4.

After a flurry of chances, Anaheim's Francois Beauchemin took a shot from the point that Rickard Rakell deftly redirected into the net to give them a big road win and push Winnipeg to the brink.

Louisville Walk-off Steal

3 of 10

This may be a bit off the beaten path, but that doesn't take away from the incredible finish and dramatic victory here.

The Louisville Cardinals are one of the best college baseball teams in the country, but they needed some magic to get past Wake Forest on Saturday.

Louisville's Corey Ray was intentionally walked, advanced to second on a single and moved to third after a wild pitch.

Then Ray did the unthinkable and took off for home. Somehow he beat the throw as it ricocheted off the catcher's mitt and gave the Cardinals a win in perhaps the most thrilling way possible.

Tavares Wins It in OT

4 of 10

After two heated games, the New York Islanders and Washington Capitals headed back to New York City tied at one game apiece.

Despite the Islanders absolutely dominating, finishing with 42 shots on goal to Washington's 25, neither team could generate enough chances or get the puck in the net and went to overtime tied at 1-1.

But right from the faceoff, New York pushed the play into the offensive zone and John Tavares took a rebound and put it home a mere 15 seconds into the extra frame to give his team a monumental win.

Montreal-Ottawa OT Thriller

5 of 10

The Montreal Canadiens have been mostly dominant on the scoreboard in their series against the Ottawa Senators, but it is more than obvious that a historic Canadian rivalry has been sparked back up over the past week.

Things looked dire for the Canadiens in Game 3, as they were down 1-0 with a mere six minutes remaining on the clock. But Dale Weise provided the game-tying goal and Montreal forced overtime.

Weise, who was also extremely clutch in last year's playoffs, did it again in overtime with a beautiful goal that gave Montreal the 3-0 series lead.

Wizards-Raptors OT

6 of 10

The Washington Wizards had a daunting task going into Toronto to face the dangerous Raptors in front of a raucous sellout crowd last Saturday, but veteran Paul Pierce led the way for the Wiz.

Pierce had 20 points, including five in overtime, to keep Washington close with Toronto throughout the game before pulling away in the extra period.

The Wizards had a double-digit lead at one point in the second half, but Toronto staged a comeback with Greivis Vasquez's three-pointer with 25 seconds on the clock serving as the final dagger that tied it all up.

But Washington prevailed in overtime and ended up winning by a comfortable 93-86 margin.

Hayes Wins in OT

7 of 10

Wednesday night's matchup between the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers was another gritty, grind-it-out type of matchup with way more penalties than goals.

The Penguins jumped out to a lead, but the Rangers tied it in the second period at 1. Neither team could put in another during regulation.

Just a few minutes into the extra frame, rookie center Kevin Hayes put home an ugly goal after the puck bounced around the crease and gave his Rangers a monstrous Game 4 victory.

Duncan Leads Spurs in OT

8 of 10

It was a vintage Tim Duncan type of night: 28 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and not an ounce of flash or flair. But it got the job done yet again.

The San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Clippers battled all night, trading blows courtesy of Duncan, Kawhi Leonard, Blake Griffin and Chris Paul.

The Spurs blew a 10-point lead halfway through the fourth quarter, and overtime was needed to decide the game. But the Spurs roared back in overtime, scoring 17 points en route to the win, tying the series at 1.

Triple-OT Thriller in Chicago

9 of 10

I don't think anyone can argue at this point that the Chicago-Nashville series hasn't been the most exciting one so far in this postseason.

Game 4 started off relatively slow but ended up being an all-time classic that lasted for four hours and 31 minutes, with three overtimes required to decide a winner.

The two teams alternated goals during regulation and headed into overtime tied at 2. Each goalie was brilliant but a one-timer from Brent Seabrook got by Pekka Rinne just a minute into the third overtime period to give Chicago the 3-1 series lead in incredibly dramatic fashion.

Steph Curry, for the Win

10 of 10

With 9.6 seconds left in the fourth quarter of Game 3 against New Orleans, Steph Curry caught an inbounds pass from Draymond Green, set his feet, flicked his wrist and...missed.

Fortunately for him, and his Warriors squad, Marreese Speights chased down the offensive rebound, fed the ball back to Curry and watched with the rest of a stunned Smoothie King Arena as the ball splashed to the bottom of the net.

The Dubs completed a 20-point fourth-quarter comeback, then went on to wrap up an overtime victory and snag a 3-0 series lead against the Pelicans.
