WWE SmackDown Results: Biggest Winners, Losers and Moments from April 16

Erik BeastonApr 17, 2015

Who is the best champion in WWE today?

It was a question that fueled the opening segment of this week's SmackDown, which featured United States champion John Cena, Intercontinental champion Daniel Bryan and Tag Team titleholders Cesaro and Tyson Kidd.

Dared to prove that their claims to being the best were more than lip service, Kidd and Cesaro had no choice but to step up to the plate and test themselves against two of the most celebrated measuring sticks in the industry.

They ultimately failed to pick up a victory, suffering a loss that came only after Kidd collided with his wife, Natalya.

It can be argued that having the tag champions lose for a second time in a week, especially after the debacle that was the handicap match against Randy Orton on Raw, will damage the credibility of the titles. However, that those two Superstars were considered over and good enough to compete against Cena and Bryan in the main event of SmackDown tells the audience all it needs to know about how much management supports the pair.

Tyson Kidd and Cesaro were just two of the big winners from Thursday night's broadcast. FACT.

Who else joined them and who suffered the great indignity of earning loser status for this week's show?

Let's take a look by reliving the April 16 episode of WWE SmackDown.

Winner: Cameron

Former Funkadactyl Cameron has spent the last year wallowing in the undercard. However, on Thursday night, she capitalized on the previous episode of SmackDown, in which she laid out both Natalya and Alicia Fox with DDTs, by defeating those same two Divas in a Triple Threat match.

Better yet, she looked very good between the ropes while doing it. After all, she was sharing the ring with two veterans of the squared circle and could have easily had her deficiencies exposed. Instead, she did everything that was asked of her with great competence and scored the win in true heel manner, capitalizing on Fox's scissors kick on Natalya to score the pinfall victory.

With the roster in a state of flux following AJ Lee's sudden and unexpected retirement, Cameron would make for a great second-tier heel just behind the Bella Twins. The in-ring exposure she would receive in that role would also help her improve as a worker.

Losers: Dolph Ziggler and Sheamus

What should have been one of the show-stealing matches at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view is now shrouded in ridiculousness, thanks to Sheamus' revelation of the stipulation for his bout with Dolph Ziggler.

As divulged on SmackDown, the two will compete in a Kiss My Arse match. It is the first time since SummerSlam 1999 that the stipulation will be used—and with good reason. There is no coming back from the humiliation suffered by the loser. Billy Gunn had his entire singles career killed in an instant after losing that match to the Rock and never again returned to the heights he had experienced going in.

WWE has repeatedly pushed, then de-pushed Dolph Ziggler. They have called his credibility as a competitor into question through a series of losing streaks that have done neither he nor his opponent any good. Having him drop this match to Sheamus and suffer the indignity of its consequent stipulation would effectively erase any opportunity he has of ever achieving main event success again.

Sheamus, on the other hand, is just back from hiatus and is being portrayed as the Irish ass-kicker that he should have been for the past three years. A bullying heel, a loss in the type of match would be great comeuppance for his recent actions but, again, would kill any momentum he has.

WWE Creative has effectively booked themselves into a corner here, and either Sheamus or Ziggler is going to pay for the writing team's incompetence.

Winner: Neville

It was another strong performance from the former NXT champion as he battled another former heavyweight champion of the world, this time Sheamus, in singles competition.

Neville was never treated like a plucky underdog. Instead, he was booked to be Sheamus' equal, battling through the punishment and pain to come close to defeating his opponent before the Irishman's temper got the best of him, leading to a disqualification.

One of the best things about the Neville character is how he has been thrown into the ring with accomplished talent and been allowed to do his thing. Sure, he has lost more than he has won, but he has done so in competitive matches that have really opened the eyes of the fans to the immense talent he possesses.

Neville is going to be a star for WWE for years to come, and much of that is down to the way he has been booked to this point.
