IPL 2015 Results: Hyderabad vs. Rajasthan Scorecard and Updated Points Table

Matt JonesApr 16, 2015

Rajasthan Royals continued their excellent form in the Indian Premier League, beating Hyderabad Sunrisers by six wickets in peculiar contest in Visakhapatnam.

The Sunrisers were put into bat after losing the toss and struggled to get going at any point with the bat. Some classy bowling performances from Pravin Tambe and Dhawal Kulkarni immediately put Rajasthan on the front foot and eventually, Hyderabad stumbled to a total of 127 for five.

It was score that was always going to be difficult to defend and a confident Rajasthan team never looked flustered as they hunted down the target. Ajinkya Rahane lead the way superbly with the bat and despite looking comfortable throughout, eventually it was left to James Faulkner to secure the one run needed off the final ball to take victory.

Read on for a full recap of the match and a look at how this result affects the overall tournament standings.

Rajasthan Secure Nervy Win Against Hyderabad

3 of 3

Rajasthan Royals (131/4) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (127/5) by six wickets

It’s four wins from four for the Rajasthan Royals in the 2015 Indian Premier League, as they notched a tense win against Hyderabad Sunrisers.

After winning the toss, Steve Smith opted to put the hosts into bat and as has been the case throughout this tournament, the opening pair of David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan failed to fire. The latter was the first to go for just 10 and while the Aussie’s 21 from 14 balls was entertaining, it wasn’t enough to set a solid foundation for the team.

When Lokesh Rahul fell not long after, the Sunrisers were in deep trouble at 35 for three in the sixth over. But as noted by HoldingWilleyCricket, credit should go to the bowling of Dhawal Kulkarni, who was excellent in the opening stages:

"

A wicket maiden. Superb bowling by @dhawal_kulkarni. His bowling figures so far are 2-1-6-2. #SRHvRR #IPL.

— HoldingWilleyCricket (@holdingwilley) April 16, 2015"

That brought Eoin Morgan to the crease alongside Naman Ojha and the pair look to be reconstructing the innings having put on 52 for the fourth wicket. But 42-year-old spin bowler Pravin Tambe produced a moment of magic to get rid of Ojha for 25.

His delivery ripped back in from out wide, careering into the bamboozled batsman’s stumps. As noted here by cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle, it was an incredible delivery:

"

Wow, just saw the ball Tambe bowled to Naman Ojha. Don't miss! What a story he is! #PepsiIPL

— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) April 16, 2015"

It was a dismissal that seemed to sap the life from the Sunrisers and when Morgan fell to Tambe in his next over for 27, things were looking very bleak for them. Ravi Bopara (23 from 19 balls) and Ashish Reddy (13 from nine) were left unbeaten at the end of the innings, as Hyderabad scrambled to a final total of 127 for five.

A score that meagre was always going to be tough to defend, but cricket statistician Mohandas Menon reminded us that the Sunrisers have pulled off similar feats before:

"

Defending low totals.... #SRH have done it before in #IPL SRH 119/8 (20 ov) PWI 108/10 (19 ov) at Pune 2013 #SRHvRR

— Mohandas Menon (@mohanstatsman) April 16, 2015"

However, the opening pair of Ajinkya Rahane and Sanju Samson quickly abated any lingering concerns for the visitors, as they put on a measured partnership of 64 for the first wicket at circa a run-a-ball.

As we can see, the runs accrued by the former saw him move to the top of individual run-scorer standings:

"

Smith departs with 135 runs and the Orange Cap very temporarily with him. Aaaand Rahane takes it back with a boundary. On 136 now. #SRHvRR

— HoldingWilleyCricket (@holdingwilley) April 16, 2015"

Rahane played beautifully for his 62 and while Samson, Smith and Karun Nair all lost their wickets cheaply, with the India international at the crease, the result was never in doubt.

He carried his bat all the way the penultimate over and while the Royals did cut things far too fine, there was always a sense of assurance about the chase. Eventually, James Faulkner hit the winning runs with just one ball to spare.

While they weren’t really fancied as potential champions prior to the competition getting underway, there’s been much to admire about the manner in which the Royals have gone about their business. There are no megastars in this line-up, but up to now, every player seems to be chipping in with important contributions, making Rajasthan a very difficult side to topple.

Big challenges await this team, though. Arguably the three finest sides in the tournament—Chennai Super Kings, Kings XI Punjab and Royal Challengers Bangalore—will be their next three opponents; if they come through those matches unscathed, we could well be looking at a serious title tilt from this Royals squad.
