WWE Extreme Rules 2015: Most Likely Swerves at Marquee PPV

Aaron BowerApr 15, 2015

As WWE's Extreme Rules pay-per-view gets nearer and nearer, talk and attention is starting to shift toward the dramatic events that look set to unfold on the show.

There are bound to be some matches that fail to captivate those watching, but the traditional swerves that take place at every pay-per-view will certainly keep the interest high.

And with most matches having stipulations, it only serves to increase the interest and the hype in what should be a solid pay-per-view. But what sort of swerves can we expect?

Although it isn't a complete swerve in the sense of a dramatic storyline twist, Randy Orton's contest with Seth Rollins could well see a note of interest.

Not only is the match in a steel cage, but another of the stipulations is that Orton's patented RKO is banned.

That will make things interesting when it comes to the latter stages of the match, and for the record, it's another nice move to increase hatred toward the heel persona of Rollins.

But if the WWE is intent on having Orton retain his unhinged babyface gimmick, it could use Extreme Rules as the perfect backdrop to have him bring back his most extreme move.

The punt in the head Orton used during the first few years of his career has been a notable absentee from his skill set recently, but the WWE has teased bringing it back. Without the RKO to aid Orton, will Orton punt Rollins in the skull and live up to the name of the show? It would be bold, and it would certainly be a brave and worthwhile move.

Elsewhere, the tension between Rollins and Kane since The Authority have been absent from TV leads you to believe there could be another swerve that involves the WWE world heavyweight champion.

Rollins having Kane lie down and essentially forfeit his match with the champion on Raw this past Monday has only further served to heighten the tensions between the two men, and that could come to a head at Extreme Rules.

Does it mean a babyface turn for Kane is in the pipeline, or is the WWE teasing us? If it is the former, then it'll be interesting to note how the storyline plays out. Having him turn on Rollins but ultimately be beaten down by The Authority would at least give Kane a platform and a position of relevance heading out of Extreme Rules, things he's been dearly lacking lately.

Finally, it's hard not to imagine a swerve involving Bray Wyatt at Extreme Rules. Ever since his loss to The Undertaker at WrestleMania, Wyatt has been in full-on mysterious mode once again when it comes to his promos.

However, while we all knew he was targeting Undertaker at WrestleMania, we're a little less clear on his intended target this time around.

When you skim through the card for Extreme Rules, it looks like there could be a number of potential candidates. Dolph Ziggler is one such example, as is Daniel Bryan. In fact, a return to Wyatt vs. Bryan with the Intercontinental Championship at stake would certainly make for interesting viewing.

But with Rollins likely to remain WWE world heavyweight champion at Extreme Rules, could Wyatt's crosshairs be locked on Orton?

You get the impression that, as mentioned, Rollins will be holding onto the belt until Brock Lesnar returns later this year at the very least. That leaves Orton needing to find a rivalry to keep him engaged, and working with Wyatt would certainly tick a few boxes.

Keep an eye out for Wyatt's involvement at Extreme Rules, which could have a major say in the outcome of a huge match.
