Kings XI Secure Comfortable Win over Mumbai
3 of 4
Kings XI Punjab (177/5) beat Mumbai Indians (159/7) by 18 runs
Kings XI Punjab secured their first win of the 2015 Indian Premier League, as they beat Mumbai Indians in an 18-run win.
After a solid start to their innings, Punjab were given some late impetus courtesy of a fine effort from skipper George Bailey, as he notched an unbeaten 61 from just 32 balls. Kings XI eventually posted a score of 177 for five from their 20 overs.
It was always going to be a tough chase for the Indians, but after losing a flurry of early wickets it never looked on. The visitors deserve immense credit for the balanced, boisterous bowling they showcased up front, and despite a fantastic 64 from Harbhajan Singh, the win wasn't in doubt for Kings XI at any point.
Punjab struggled to get going with the bat in their opening loss to Rajasthan, but here the opening duo of Virender Sehwag and Murali Vijay got the 2014 runners-up off to a better start. The former was particularly impressive, as he smashed 36 off 19.
As noted by ESPNcricinfo, the legendary batsman helped his team get off to a flyer.
But Sehwag's dismissal was followed quickly by that of the dangerous Glenn Maxwell. And when Vijay himself went in the 11th over, Kings XI’s momentum had been sapped at 88 for three. But some explosive late batting from Bailey really brought this game to life.
The captain stood up in the face of some quality bowling from Mumbai. As noted by Freddie Wilde of ESPNcricinfo, his effort was so important in Kings XI getting to a competitive score.
With 177 runs on the board, this was always going to be a tough chase for the hosts, and it got even more difficult on the second ball of their innings after losing star batsman Rohit Sharma, who was pinned in front by Sandeep Sharma.
As noted by Cricbuzz, it was some early swing from the veteran bowler that did it for the India international.
It was a wicket that set the tone for the entire innings, as Kings XI’s bowling attack sensed blood and tore into the Indians’ batting line-up. Anureet Singh, Mitchell Johnson and Axar Patel all picked up a wicket each, as Mumbai crumbled to 25 for four in the eighth over. Even at this stage, it was pretty clear they had no chance of victory.
The score accrued at the midpoint by Mumbai was meagre.
Johnson was particularly impressive with the ball for Kings XI, as he picked up two wickets for 23. He was key in restricting the Mumbai outfit to just 159 for seven inside their 20 overs, and despite a wonderful 24-ball 64 from Singh, they fell 18 runs short of the Kings XI total.
Ravi Bopara paid tribute to Singh's remarkable late flourish, with was some consolation for the Mumbai crowd.
Kings XI will have been delighted to have gotten back to winning ways after the disappointment of the opening loss. This was a performance bristling with the kind of swagger they showcased so often throughout the 2014 season. From a Punjab perspective, hopefully this is a win they can build off moving forward.
As for Mumbai, that’s two defeats in two games. After the manner in which they caved in early doors here, it’s already looking like a very difficult ask for them to make it into the playoffs of the 2015 IPL.
Royals Tame Daredevils in Last-Ball Thriller
4 of 4
Rajasthan Royals (186/7) beat Delhi Daredevils (184/3) by 3 wickets
Rajasthan Royals defeated the Delhi Daredevils on the last ball in a rollercoaster encounter to maintain their 100 per cent start to IPL 2015.
New Zealand World Cup star Tim Southee struck the winning runs with a beautifully taken four after Chris Morris had done the hard work in the final few overs.
The Royals’ Twitter feed revelled in the glory of victory after the Kiwi star found the boundary.
While it was an emphatic victory, Delhi got off to a brilliant start after being sent in to bat, chalking up 51 runs in the powerplay, with only Mayank Agarwal’s wicket falling for 37.
Shreyas Iyer and JP Duminy then flew the Daredevils’ flag with scores in the 40s, while Angelo Mathews and Yuvraj Singh also contributed well with 27 apiece.
Duminy was the star of the show with the bat, though, slogging his way to two sixes in the final over to set his side’s total of 184/3. Delhi Daredevils were quick to praise the South African’s efforts.
After being played far too low down the order, Duminy showed why he’s an excellent No. 3 batsman, as his unbeaten stand of 44 was Delhi’s best haul.
So, the chase was on for Rajasthan. After a solid batting display against Kings XI, they would have been full of confidence.
They got off to an excellent start, too, with Ajinkya Rahane and Sanju Samson doing the business at the crease.
However, in the fifth over, Mathews struck at his first attempt with the ball.
That left the Royals on 37/1, and after Steve Smith, Karun Nair and Stuart Binny were given their marching orders, the situation was looking bleak at 78/4.
Enter Deepak Hooda.
The 19-year-old has been tipped by many as a star of the future, and he truly lived up to his billing with a sensational innings to steady the Rajasthan ship.
It took him just 22 balls to reach his half-century, hitting boundaries galore in the process—via ESPNcricinfo.
Just three balls later, Hooda was sent packing. But with the Royals on 166/6 with two overs remaining, the damage was done.
New Zealand star Jimmy Neesham was one of many to stand back and admire the youngster’s knock.
Imran Tahir then thought he’d done enough by taking James Faulkner’s wicket—his fourth of the day—to leave the Royals on 173, but Morris and Southee had the last laugh.
Southee isn’t exactly renowned for his batting, but the way he slogged the winning four runs without a single ball to spare was incredible and made for the most amazing spectacle.
ESPN’s Freddie Wilde commented on just how dramatic the victory was.
The win moves the Royals level on points with Chennai Super Kings at the top of the IPL tree, with Mumbai Indians next up on Tuesday.
As for Delhi, Sunday’s match was yet another lesson in just how cruel the tournament can be—as if their final-ball defeat to the Super Kings wasn’t enough.
They take on Kings XI Punjab on Wednesday as they look to set the record straight and finally get lady luck on their side.
In IPL, she can be a very important teammate.
