WWE Extreme Rules 2015: Worst Matches in History of PPV

Aaron BowerApr 10, 2015

As the pay-per-view that provides WWE fans with a cure for the post-WrestleMania hangover, Extreme Rules is a show that is truly like no other.

With a show that is full of matches that contain stipulations, it means that we're likely to see plenty of extremity and plenty of drama.

However, for all the good that Extreme Rules has served up since its first ever outing in 2009, there have been a few matches that have ultimately disappointed. Here are a selection of the worst matches we've seen in Extreme Rules history.

Santina vs. Vickie Guerrero (2009)

We start at the first edition of Extreme Rules, way back in 2009.

For some reason, the WWE decided to throw Santino Marella's character down an even more bizarre path than the one it was on already, when he dressed as a woman to fight Vickie Guerrero.

The storyline was based around Santino's "twin sister," Santina, facing Vickie in what was described as a Hog Pen match. Extreme Rules is well known for its stipulation matches, but this was a whole new level of crazy from WWE.

Inevitably, the match was appalling. That is quite harsh on Guerrero, who was thrust into a situation with which she was hardly familiar at the time.

However, the two of them have to take the blame. This was without doubt one of the worst matches ever seen at this pay-per-view.

El Torito vs. Hornswoggle (2014)

OK, it was on the pre-show, but that doesn't excuse this bizarre and, quite frankly, awful match from making it onto the list of worst matches in the history of Extreme Rules.

In a bout that lasted nearly 11 minutes, El Torito defeated Hornswoggle with some of the WWE's biggest Z-listers at ringside.

Hornswoggle was flanked by the former stable 3MB, consisting of Jinder Mahal, Drew McIntyre and Heath Slater. Only the latter is still with the company.

It was dubbed a "WeeLC Match," which, although comedic on occasions, was just not really the sort of thing WWE fans are after from a pay-per-view pre-show—something that can often set the tone for the rest of the night.

Michael Cole and Jack Swagger vs. Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler (2011)

Everyone knows that a year can be a long time in professional wrestling. One minute you're at the top of your game, the next you're down in the doldrums.

Well, that's exactly the way things panned out for Jack Swagger in 2011. A year previous, he was tussling with Randy Orton at Extreme Rules for the World Heavyweight Championship. Yet fast forward a year, and he was competing in a match with three commentators.

He teamed up with Michael Cole to face Jerry Lawler and Jim Ross, fresh from Lawler and Cole's bout at WrestleMania in 2011.

The match never got going, which is understandable, given three-quarters of the competitors were more accustomed to sitting at ringside and calling the action in the modern era.

Swagger did give it a good shot throughout the match, and you can't fault his effort in the bout. But there's no doubting it's one of the worst matches in Extreme Rules history.
