Seth Rollins, Neville, The New Day and More from the Fresh Face Mailbag
Post-WrestleMania season is usually a drag. But with fresh faces and newer talents coming into their own, this one could be a lot of fun.
Seth Rollins' first WWE world heavyweight title seems like a transitional move before Roman Reigns finally gets the ball, but just how long will Rollins hold on to that title?
Rollins vs. Lesnar at SummerSlam?

Most Likely Backlash Heel/Face Turns 🎭
"@ThisIsNasty If Rollins face Lesnar at SS, Will WWE give him the win (by hook or crook)? or will it depend on his performance as a champion?
— The Last Tweener (@TheLastTweener) April 9, 2015"
My hunch tells me SummerSlam will see a Triple Threat rematch between Seth Rollins, Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns. I think SummerSlam is when Rollins drops the title. Reigns looks to be the prohibitive favorite, but Lesnar is so over that WWE might opt to put the title back on him.
Keep in mind SummerSlam will be held in front of a hot New York crowd at the Barclays Center, meaning Reigns will be an even bigger heel to them than he was at WrestleMania.
I'd be surprised if Rollins held the WWE World Heavyweight Championship past SummerSlam. A five-month reign for a first-time champion sounds about right, because it's not a fluke, but then again it's not necessarily a dynasty.
If Rollins does retain the title, however, it will definitely be by crook.
Zayn or Neville?
"@ThisIsNasty who's upside is bigger? Zayn and his story telling ability in matches or Neville's high flying maneuvers? Maybe both?
— O Steph Curry (@Oasis3457) April 8, 2015"
Zayn's upside is bigger because he's so likable and will develop a cult following of hardcore fans and casual supporters similar to that of Daniel Bryan. It's just too hard not to root for the guy. He's like Ricky the Steamboat with improved promos.
Neville definitely has upside, but it will be easy for WWE to shoehorn him into the role of a high-flyer who puts on great matches but loses to superior talent. Two matches in, and Seth Rollins beat him. Neville is in danger of becoming WWE's new Evan Bourne.
Bourne fans didn't mind his losing because WWE didn't really develop a character with him. His biggest appeal was an awesome finisher that overshadowed everything else he brought to the table.
I have a feeling that if WWE tries to slot Zayn in a similar role to Neville, fans will have none of it, and he'll immediately become the lovable loser vocal, hardcore fans rally behind.
The New Heels?
"@ThisIsNasty how soon until the New Day fully turns Heel. I see it slowly building already
— Jon T. ™ (@Johhny_McLovin) April 7, 2015"
The New Day are going to have a slow burn. They've already begun to show heel tendencies. I have no problem with the group continuing to lose, but hopefully they're losing to build frustration and justify an eventual heel turn.
The New Day have potential as heels. People want to dislike them, which is music to a villain's ears. The New Day need to operate more as a stable and less as a tag team. To reiterate a point I made on this week's PodNasty Wrestling Podcast, They need to build their identity as three elite talents who are tired of being Mr. Nice Guys.
The stable needs to build on Big E's comments about wrestling fans asking them to sign autographs only to boo them days later. There's a novelty in The New Day turning heel, because Kofi Kingston has never been heel, and fans don't know anything about Xavier Woods other than the fact that he's smart.
A heel New Day could be the most improved act of the year. It's just a matter of how far WWE goes with it.
Improvement among NXT Call-ups?
"@ThisIsNasty Impressive debuts and, more importantly, follow ups for Neville and Kalisto. Did somebody teach Vince how to do NXT call-ups?
— Collin Powell (@CollinCPowell) April 7, 2015"
No. WWE just selected the right batch of call-ups this time around. Kalisto and Sin Cara were jeered as Geico Lizards during their final days in NXT. Neville drew apathy from hardcore fans who chose to dole out their support to Kevin Owens, Zayn and Finn Balor.
Neville and The Lucha Dragons have easy-to-watch, high-flying styles that translate to a casual viewing audience. They're not a Rocky Horror Picture Show like Adam Rose or Emma.
Anybody can appreciate the acrobatics and athleticism they boast. A lot of other NXT aspects, however, are acquired tastes. For certain talents who are over at NXT, the bigger the gimmick, the bigger the risk.
