Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Found Guilty for Boston Marathon Bombing
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was found guilty for his role in the bombings at the 2013 Boston Marathon. A federal jury reached its decision after 11 hours of deliberations that ended Wednesday.
Katharine Q. Seelye of The New York Times reports that the guilty verdict for the attacks and aftermath, which killed three people and wounded 240 others, was expected. The focus now shifts to the second phase of the process to determine whether he will receive the death penalty:
"The verdict sets the stage for a second, more contentious phase of the trial in which the same jury will decide whether to sentence him to life in prison or death.
The courtroom was packed with survivors and victims' families, many of whom had testified against him. Mr. Tsarnaev was greeted by his lead lawyer, Judy Clarke, who touched his arm and whispered to him.
"
The report notes Tsarnaev's lawyers have admitted he was involved in the bombings. They have been focused on the sentencing by stating his brother, Tamerlan, was the driving force behind the crime, an argument they believe could spare the younger sibling's life. Tamerlan died after a shootout with police.
Ann O'Neill of CNN provides a breakdown of the jury's decisions. It found him guilty on all 30 counts connected with the bombings and the aftermath. A total of 17 of those charges carry the possibility of the death penalty:
"Jurors in the Boston Marathon bombing trial have found Dzhokhar Tsarnaev guilty of all 17 counts that carry a possible penalty of death.
The jury determined that he's responsible for the April 2013 deaths of Krystle Campbell, Martin Richard, Lingzi Lu and Sean Collier.
"
The U.S. Attorney's Office in Massachusetts notes a date for the next phase of the case has not yet been set.
Despite the attack two years ago, the 2014 Boston Marathon went on as scheduled last April, and this year's event takes place April 20.
