Anthony Joshua vs. Jason Gavern: Winner, Recap and Reaction

Nate LoopApr 4, 2015

Eleven professional bouts and Anthony Joshua still has no idea what it's like to fight in the fourth round.

The 25-year-old Joshua (11-0, 11 KOs) cruised to victory yet again, pummeling Jason Gavern (26-20-4, 11 KOs) en route to a third-round knockout victory at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle, England. Pizza deliveries promise pies in 30 minutes or less. Joshua is even better; he delivers knockouts in three rounds or less.

Gavern, a journeyman fighter from the United States, was clearly no match for the young phenom. Joshua knocked him to the canvas four times in the bout. The official counted Gavern out on the fourth and final knockdown, handing an easy victory to Joshua. Gavern is just the second fighter to reach the third round against Joshua.

Bleacher Report UK totaled up Joshua's rounds boxed so far in his professional career:

After a five-month layoff due to a back injury, Joshua returned to the squared circle on Saturday night, intent on proving that he had lost none of the power and speed that made him such a fearsome, brutal fighter through his first 10 bouts.

From the opening bell, it was clear Gavern was merely looking to survive this bout. Joshua was clearly the fitter fighter, and his superior reach prevented the Floridian from even having a chance at mounting his own offense. The Watford man's left hand proved particularly effective early on, a jab stronger than many fighter's best power punches. Gavern had little choice but to punch wildly and clinch to run down the clock.

The second round was a mess for Gavern. Joshua knocked him down twice in the round. He scored the first knockdown with a rocking left jab to the chin followed by a right hook that Gavern protested was to the back of the head. It was a moot point, however, as Joshua quickly followed up with a devastating combo seconds later that sent Gavern crashing back to the mat.

Wolverhampton Wanderer Dominic Iorfa made a promise on Joshua's behalf after the second:

The third was no better for Gavern. Joshua scored a quick knockdown, making the finishing blows look absolutely routine. The second knockdown proved to be a knockout, as Joshua's left hook to the chin rocked an already dizzied Gavern. The 37-year-old tried to get back up, but he was counted out clinging to the ropes, the picture of fatigue and defeat.

Tennis great Andy Murray has been impressed by Joshua:

Anthony Fowler noted Joshua's fights have become routine to the point of boredom:

There is no doubt about it: Joshua needs to challenge a better class of fighter. He's simply too long, powerful and quick for most heavyweights, and his record speaks for itself. Joshua has the talent and Herculean looks of a potential world champ. Wladimir Klitschko praised the young stud before the match, calling him the "future of the division," per the Telegraph's Gareth A. Davies.

Joshua's next fight is already on the books, a bout scheduled for May 30 against Kevin Johnson (29-6-1) at the O2 Arena in London.

Johnson could prove to be Joshua's toughest test yet, but considering the strength and skill he's displayed thus far in his career, Johnson could be in for a short night. If Joshua cruises to an easy win, look for him to take a major leap in the quality of his opponents well before the end of the calendar year.
